Jennifer Kellinger and I dined at Friaco's a couple weeks ago. We both agreed that the ceviche was so good that we could come back and order just that. And I did. It was in that moment, about a week later, that I realized that it wasn't just the good food that would bring me back to Friaco's, but also the good service.
I had to run an errand to Joliet this past Friday when the snow was falling all around. Friaco's was on my way home, so I called in an order of ceviche. I also ordered tortilla chips and a side of guacamole. When I came to pick up my order, there was tortilla soup. When I told them I only wanted tortilla chips, not soup, they took the charge off my bill and then took it one step further. They gave me the soup to take home.
I shared it with my family at dinner that night and it wasn't spicy at all. If you are a regular reader, you know that I am kind of wimpy when it comes to spicy food. I find the salsa at Hacienda Don Villa a little on the hot side. This turned out to be just a good, flavorful soup with large chunks of chicken.
For me, though, the real star at Friaco's is the ceviche. Ceviche is a raw fish dish that in this case is topped with a kind of pico de gallo and large chunks of avocado. The fish is marinated in a citrus and the lemony-flavor of the dish is what makes it a winner.
Kellinger and I ate nearly the whole dish of ceviche by the time the actual meals we had ordered arrived. I ordered the fish tacos, which were on a lunch menu for $7.99. Kellinger ordered the combo fiesta and she did enjoy her meal. But even as we ate our lunch selections, we continued to rave about and eat more of the ceviche.
Kellinger and I did not start out intending to eat at Friaco's. We first headed to El Palenque Restaurant, in Shorewood, but when we both arrived, we realized it had closed. With an intention to eat Mexican food, I picked the closest one I knew of that came to mind.
Friaco's is in Joliet, at 1121 Essington Road, not far from Metro Grill. The have a lunch special menu with dishes starting at $4.99.
