I-80 Semi-Truck Collision Leaves Man Badly Hurt

The accident was caused by one truck clipping another, forcing the second truck into the median, according to the Illinois State Police.

Update 8:25 p.m.

A Chicago man was seriously injured Thursday when his semi-truck was clipped by another semi on Interstate 80, forcing his vehicle into the grassy median west of Briggs Street, Illinois State Police Sgt. James M. Powell said.

The accident occurred at about 1:15 p.m. when a truck traveling in the right lane of westbound I-80 pulled into the left lane and collided with a second truck already in that lane, Powell said. The impact caused the second truck to veer into the center median.

The truck driver, 38, was badly injured and transported to a Joliet-area hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to serious, Powell said.

Both lanes of westbound I-80 were closed for more than five hours. One lane of traffic reopened at about 5:30 p.m., but the scene was not completely cleared until about 7:45 p.m., Powell said. A gapers' block into the eastbound lanes of traffic caused a long jam on both side of the interstate, he said.

It's possible they may need to close a lane tomorrow to clean up any fuel that remains from the spill caused by the crash, he said.

The driver who caused the accident, a 30-year-old Chicago man, stopped at the scene and was issued two tickets. Powell said he did not know what charges were cited.

Updated 6:33 p.m.

Illinois State Police Sgt. James M. Powell issued this statement: "All lanes of I-80 westbound at Briggs street are open at this time. The left lane will be closed for diesel cleanup. The estimated time for that closure is 1 hour. I will advise when that job is complete and the left lane reopens."

Updated 3:16 p.m.

State police said the truck hit another vehicle and that one person was injured. Further details weren't immediately available. Traffic is still backed up on I-80. Check back for more details.

Earlier:

The two westbound lanes of Interstate 80, just west of Briggs Street in Joliet, have been closed by an accident involving a semi-tractor truck.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Martez Malone said the accident caused the truck to lose its load, and he was not sure on the timetable to clear the debris. No other details were available.

Drivers are urged to avoid the area, if possible.

We'll post more information as it becomes available.

This is the route I drive to and from work. Most semi drivers fly though this area at a speed of 65-75 mph...The speed limit there is 55 mph for all vehicles, not just cars....Our overpaid state police need to step up their game and start ticketing more and more semi drivers for speeding....I have informed my wife that if I get in an accident on the highway involving a semi that she is to sue the truck driver, the employer of the truck driver for employing the dangerous driver and the state police because they fail to do their job and keep me safe from dangerous truck driver.

no matter the tickets..How many people you see gun their cars after passing someone that's pulled over..most of the time its not even a quarter mile past and everyone is back up to 70mph...Its people not the police's responsibility to keep everyone safe...its peoples choice to endanger others...no police can stop anyone from speeding..and as soon as your out of sight from the police people go right back to speeding...Want more and more people pulled over, more and more people searched, more people taken to jail for tax payers to pay for.more police state?...The state police hand out millions of dollars worth of tickets each year and still has not fixed it...and nothing will no matter how much violence they use to enforce the laws...no the cops fault how hard people push their gas pedals...

John I appreciate your liberterian style views and agree that speeding tickets won't slow everyone down. And I fully agree that it is not the police who are at fault if you get into an accident from someone else speeding or driving wrecklessly. Many people are hit by uninsured, unlicensed driver's. They are that way due to the police ticketing and doing their "job".
But if enough truckers get speeding tickets they will slow down. They will begin to lose their licenses and have to find alternate occupations if they don't. Is it a money grab by the government? Sure it is. Should people police themselves? You bet. Trouble is they don't. I would rather the government make it's money from speeding tickets than raise my taxes. I know the gubmint has more problems than this and likely more important things to do. And I know they are way to big and stick their noses places it shouldn't be. But that doesn't mean I think they should just stop enforcing laws and leave everyone alone. Most people need some structure.

Ok, no you can go on a rant about how much taxpayer dollars are wasted by policing activities. I know it's coming, I guess I deserve it.

Where in the article does it say he was speeding? You know what they say about people who make assumptions...Instead, why don't we pray for the people who were involved and their loved ones?

How are the employers going to be aware of the truck drivers "dangerous driving"? If an employer hires a driver who has a perfect driving record, there is no evidence of the way that he or she drives their truck. While it isn't right for semi-trucks to drive at high speeds and put others in harms way, the same goes for individuals who drive cars hazardously. Stop playing the blame game and being so sue-happy!

I don't agree with John Roberts. The speeders and reckless drivers need to be ticketed. There are not enough police to enforce the limits. Hire more police and write more tickets. I for one can't afford a $150.00 ticket. In the past if you received more then three moving violations your license would get suspended. The state needs money, people need jobs. Write more tickets and make the roads safe.

are you related to the woman who wants to sue for getting hit in the head with a rolled up tee shirt last year at Taste Of Joliet?

The fact is that many drivers, whatever they drive, don't have the slightest consideration for other road users. The bridge speed limit - and at least a mile either end of it is 45mph. If you actually drive at 45 - you'll get run off the road. Combine an unrealistic speed limit, and careless driving, no wonder there's so many accidents and near -misses!

These guys do need to be slowed down. Coming south on 294 the day of the snow storm I was in the second lane, going a little faster than the first lane and a little slower than the third. These bonehead truckers were in the far left lane (where they aren't even supposed to be) and absolutely flying. I mean on poor pavement! If a couple cars tangle, there may be damage and minor injuries, but involve a 70 MPH semi and people will DIE. I kept thinking, where's the freekin cops?

and where do you think all these speeding semi's come from on 80? they come from 53,if the state wanted to make money they should sit on 53 all day everyday not only is there massive speeding going on but all these trucks park in the middle of 53 to go to speedway or boz hotdogs or the taco truck sometimes it's so bad you can't see around the trucks to even pull out onto 53,and DriverC your absolutely right if you drive the speed limit over the bridges you will get run over people fly through there at 65 plus like there are no speed limits

Alot of these drivers don't seem to care if they run you off the road. I travel down and back on 80 daily and at least 3xs a week I'm forced to swerve out of the way or slam my brakes to avoid being hit. They "forget" to check mirrors because they know most people will drive off the road to avoid being hit by a semi. They won't stay in the far lane during heavy on and off ramp areas. They are not the only ones that are losing money if they are late somewhere. These jerks don't even do the customary light flashing in thank you when someone let's them in a lane ahead of them. And us...the little guys in cars..what are we supposed to do about these reckless drivers after they nearly run us off of the road? Use our phone while driving to look up the number for state police and follow the driver to where they are going to file a complaint? Hope the police show up? State police are doing nothing driving up and down highway. Why don't they try something else? And yes..that's me in the little car that refuses to speed up or move out of the way when you come flying up on me.

For every 10 speeding semis, there are 30-40 speeding cars. Hypocrites. We are all guilty.

i drive 80/94 everyday. and at certain points in the freeway there are 3 to 5 lanes. the speed in one area goes from 65 to 55 but the whole are signs say 55 for semis to use right lane...this never happens. they will be in the far two left lanes riding everyones butts flashing their headlights at you within ten feet of your bumper. the other day i admit i was doing 65 in the fast lane with other cars and 5 semis flew around us so fast it was like we were sitting still. the whole car shook. they had to be going at least 80 and looked like same company with identical trailers. these 53 foot trailers can carry cargo over 90,000 pounds and they weave in and out of traffic in this area like theyre driving a little sports car....no wonder there are so many accidents on this stretch of freeway...yes there are many inconsiderate auto drivers; but a huge semi who figures they can take alll the risks they want because the cars will get out of there way because the car will lose this crash and it will hurt or you will die. many of them use their riggs like a lethal weapon.. they know you are scared and will do everything you can to avoid getting hit by them so they bully auto drivers...i would love to see them caught and pulled over

I TOO TRAVEL THIS ROUTE EVERYDAY AND I WAS A WITNESS TO THIS ACCIDENT, THE TRUCK DRIVER WHO CAUSED THE ACCIDENT WAS GOING PASS ME AS IF I WAS STANDING STILL. HE WAS ALSO ON HIS CELL PHONE, WHEN I PULLED OVER TO TELL THE POLICE WHAT I SEEN I WAS TOLD MY ASSISTANCE WAS NOT NEEDED AND I CAN LEAVE. I TRIED TO TELL THE STATE TROOPER WHAT I SAW WHEN THAT DRIVER SWERVED AND ALMOST HIT ME BECAUSE OF BEING ON HIS CELL PHONE, I BLEW MY HORN AND PLAYED IT OUT TO HANG UP THE PHONE THIS DRIVER GAVE ME THE FINGER AND KEPT TAILGATING ME TILL I SPED AWAY AND GO INTO THE OTHER LANE AND THE 15 MINUTES LATER THE CRASH HAPPENED. ITS A SHAME A STATE TROOPER CAN PULL YOU OVER CAUSE YOU HAVE LENSES ON YOUR LICENSE PLATE BUT CANT PULL TRUCK DRIVERS OVER FOR TALKING ON A CELL PHONE IN SUCH A DANGEROUS VEHICLE... WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THAT

Okay - I have the solution. Let's just get rid of the trucks. That way we won't have to worry about reckless driving. Of course, there won't be food at the store, clothing, or anything else you buy. It's not just the trucks - we are all guilty of reckless driving. I love how on I 80 - cars ride along in the left lane and cut people off to get on the I55 exit ramp - -- The truck driver on the cell phone - that's illegal -- they are supposed to use a hands free device. However people in cars don't - so it's okay for them to chat on the phone, use their laptop, text, etc. Again -- we are all guilty

Hey Common Sense - a real job that takes brains? Wow - that really wasn't warranted. This forum is for comments, not attacks on people you don't know personally.
