What is snoring?
When a person is snoring, the path of air from their mouth or nose to the lungs makes the tissues of their throat vibrate when they sleep. As a result, a loud, harsh noise occurs. In fact, you may not realize that you snore. Your bed partner may notice the snoring and that you sleep with your mouth open.
In addition, snoring may point to other medical problems, such as sleep apnea. “Sleep apnea can be a serious problem, because you stop breathing at times during sleep,” says Dr. Philip Leung, Medical Director of the Silver Cross Sleep Disorders Center. “So if you snore often, be sure to see your physician.”
Treatment for Snoring
“By making lifestyle changes people can find great relief from snoring,” said Dr. Leung. Some changes that have helped reduce snoring include: sleeping on your side, quitting smoking, losing weight, and limiting alcohol intake before going to sleep. If these treatments do not work, relief may be found with a treatment called continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP.

Silver Cross has combined the latest diagnostic technology with a home-like atmosphere. Each private room features a private bathroom, calming decor, and a comfortable bed to put our patients at ease.
At the Silver Cross Sleep Disorders Center, expert technicians perform polysomnographic testing, and sleep studies that provide a detailed picture of a patient’s entire sleep cycle. The studies allow technicians to analyze a patient’s exact sleep pattern, from the onset of sleep through the 4 normal levels of sleep, to breathing, oxygen levels, heartbeat, movement and snoring activity. Data from the study is invaluable in diagnosing and treating any sleep disorder someone may have. The morning following the sleep study, our experts then analyze the patient’s results. Some patients may begin treatment as soon as the same day.
If you or someone you love is experiencing a sleep problem, we invite you to contact our Center for an initial consultation. For more information, call 1-815-300-REST (7378) or visit www.silvercross.org/sleepdisorderscenter to take an online sleep disorders risk assessment.
