Masked Gunman Hit Shorewood Cell Phone Store
The Shorewood heist from a week and a half ago was followed by one in Plainfield Thursday.
The Thursday morning robbery of an AT&T Wireless store in Plainfield wasn't the first such stickup in Will County in recent weeks.
Plainfield police noted a Shorewood Verizon wireless story was robbed by a masked bandit more than a week ago.
Shorewood Police Chief Aaron Klima explained that the cops were keeping the March 6 holdup under wraps for fear of copycat crooks.
Klima said the masked bandit went into the Brookforest Avenue Verizon store about 10:45 a.m., brandished a handgun and ordered a clerk to fill a bag with merchandise.
The gunman took no cash, Klima said, but absconded with Verizon products.
While both the Shorewood and Plainfield robberies were committed before noon and were pulled by masked men who completely passed on grabbing money to instead steal only merchandise, Klima does not believe they are connected.
"It doesn't sound like they are the same guys," he said.
The chief also noted that other Verizon stores in the area have been victimized in a similar manner.
"In the region, according to Verizon, there's been several," he said.

I don't think that's a real picture of the robber. I think it's a stock photo.

Cell phones are an incredibly lucrative item to steal. Small, no-name stores, mall kiosks and other places can and do knowingly sell these stolen phones. After all, it is the sim card that is what makes it 'work'. Remove that , and it is basically a new phone.
Street gangs have found this to be a relatively low risk/high payoff way of making money. It is a well known fact that many of these stores have little or no security, which seems contradictory in a place where high tech devices are being sold. Larger criminal networks are buying these cell phones in quantity from the local thugs. These phones are then shipped overseas, where the profit margins are astronomical. Most frightening of all is that terrorist organizations are 'contracting' street gangs to supply them with cell phones. See, the terrorists figured out that when they buy large numbers of phones, or repeated purchases of smaller numbers, they are being tracked. So, they now just buy stolen phones from thugs willing to make a buck relatively cheaply.
I think anyone caught reselling these phones to known or even suspected terrorist fronts should be charged with Treason and executed as traitors. Maybe THAT will deter or at least slow down this rash of thefts.
BTW-the Chicago area is on the top ten list of places from which cell phones are stolen. This problem is a lot bigger than just our little town.
