Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had it right with his non-violent approach to changing the world. There are any number religious, political and social reasons I could cite as to why I believe we should turn the other cheek.

And yet, when the teen mom in Oklahoma was faced with an intruder coming through her door with a knife, I cheered to learn she blew him away with a 12-guage.

Sarah McKinley, 18, was in her mobile home alone with her 3-month old son on New Year's Eve. (Her husband, 58, had died on Christmas Day of lung cancer.)

That's when Justin Martin, 24, and his alleged partner in crime, Dustin Stewart, 29, were reportedly looking for drugs that were prescribed to the deceased.

The mom said she got her shot gun and a pistol, put a bottle in the baby's mouth, then dialed 911. With the operator on the line, she waited until Martin came through the locked door. Pow. McKinley blasted, literally, both barrels, killing him.

Right on.

As if the poor woman hadn't been through enough. Postpartum moms are still hormonal, still emotional. Then add to the equation the death of a husband. I can't imagine what she might be going through. However, I can imagine that Martin got what was coming to him. Stewart, too. He is charged with Martin's murder.

Criminals, take notice: You mess with a mom, be prepared for her to mess back. I'm not a member of the NRA. I don't necessarily support gun ownership. I definitely don't support gun violence. Frankly, even after going to some training, guns still scare me.

No matter, this young mom did right — regardless of her state of mind.

Protecting our children is our No. 1 priority, even if that means a little less Dr. King and a little more Ralph Kramden: Pow, right in the kisser.
