Police: Plainfield Man Tried to Kidnap Woman at Knifepoint
Erin E. Johnson is charged with kidnapping, vehicular hijacking after allegedly trying to force woman into car early Tuesay.
A Plainfield man is facing several felony charges after allegedly attempting to abduct a woman at knifepoint as she got into her vehicle early Tuesday morning in the 16300 block of Fairfield Drive, police said.
Erin E. Johnson, 19, of 16941 Plainsman Circle is charged with kidnapping, aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery, aggravated battery and aggravated assault.
Sgt. Mike Fisher said the victim was getting into her car around 4:22 a.m. when Johnson attempted to push her into the passenger seat of the vehicle.
“It appeared to be his intent to take her and the vehicle,” Fisher said. “She was warming up her car to go to work, and he came up to her and got in her face and was pushing her into the passenger seat.”
Fisher said the woman struggled with her attacker, who fled when a neighbor heard the commotion and intervened. The victim suffered minor injuries in the attack, police said.
“Her neighbor did a great job,” Fisher said. “He knew something was going on and he got involved and probably averted her from getting injured any further.”
In a press release, Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said police gathered evidence from the scene and began an “extensive manhunt,” using both the Plainfield and Joliet police K-9 units to track.
Fisher said having two K-9 units on hand helped speed up the search, allowing police to let one dog to rest while using the other to track the suspect.
Johnson was located at around 6 a.m. in the backyard of a home on Plainsman Circle, police said. He was booked into the Will County jail and is due in court Wednesday afternoon.
Fisher said the dogs tracked Johnson through a wooded area and farm field back to his own neighborhood.
Without elaborating, Fisher said events that occured Monday evening gave police a clue that Johnson may have been involved in the attempted kidnapping.
Noting that Johnson is well known to police, Fisher said “key evidence” left at the scene gave police an idea of which direction he may have been heading. He declined to specify what evidence was found, citing an ongoing investigation.
According to Fisher, police believe the attempted hijacking was a crime of opportunity and don’t think Johnson targeted the victim.
He praised the woman’s neighbor for getting involved, adding that the victim’s screams prompted several residents of the neighborhood to call 911.
“This guy did the right thing,” Fisher said. “He got involved just the right amount to prevent her from getting more injured and not get hurt himself.
" ... She's pretty shaken up," Fisher said of the victim, adding one precaution residents can take to protect themselves is to try to be aware of their surroundings.
"Watch what's going on," he said. "And watch out for your neighbors."

Thank God the victim is okay! I wish all neighborhoods, (and based on past posts)especially Wilding Pointe, would realize that our neighbors can be important to our safety. Watch out for each other people, don't be so busy to keep up with each other or spread gossip...

Recently Wilding Pointe had a situation where police were involved and many neighbors came forward and rallied together. They continue to do so to protect our community Before you make a generalization about our whole subdivision maybe you should take that into account.

It's sad to think this degenerate lives in our community. It's awesome to know the neighbor was there and had the nerve to step in lives in our community. I am positive the community is proud of this person and I know the woman attacked is happy the neighbor was there. I would just like to say THANK YOU to the neighbor because it could have been a lot uglier of an incident if it werent for him.

Plainfield PD served as the note takers while the professionals were called in to do the job. What was not mentioned here, for some reason, is that it was the Joliet PD that came in to help solve this, for what really should be obvious reasons by now.

This crime and this guys house are within the boundaries of Plainfield, but it took the Joliet Police department coming into Plainfield to get the job done.

You must think this is a joke by the way you are tossing out personal attacks at me. This is a serious concern to the ongoing ability of this department, that it can not even handle crimes in its own borders without help from actual professionals. It is good to see they are starting to understand they are seriously under prepared and are seeking help, but it is horrible that it even was allowed to get to this point by the current leadership.

Im not saying tim is right or qrong i really sont live there but my family does real close to this man idk qhy i keep calling him kid and from my families stories that the guy constantly is taken away by the cops at his house im concerned as to why they keep letting him loose. We have seen what he's capable of what are we waiting for? A death? I hope not. Im wondering if this erin johnson has a relative in the inside because they easily let him off easy usually. Again im working towards the main goal keeping the streets safe for kids tp play on. The street he lives on there are dozens of children playing all the time say he snaps one day and that has to be our "wake up" call. It would be a tragedy. We avoid it by being proactive not reactive. As to the police well no complaints really it was a good tactic to use a resting dog and a production dog to make the search faster i just hope they keep him behind bars for long or somehow make him stay away from innocent people. Please update us on the hearing and result plainfield patch

@Tim, Perhaps you could provide evidence to support that the Plainfield Police Department served only as "notetakers" as you claim. And perhaps you forgot to mention the Joliet K9 bit one of the police officers. Perhaps you forgot there was a K9 from Plainfield that helped track the suspect.
Not many jurisdictions have all the resources necessary to handle such a violent crime. It's the relationship and collaboration between departments that created the successful police leadership to apprehend this individual. It was a good decision to ask for help to seek out this suspect rather than attempt to solve a violent crime with probably only four cops at the time of the night.
Kendall County has enough problems where you live right Tim? I think your focus is blurred after all your battling with Todd Milliron over Toftoy and Dabney. Your constant attacks on the Plainfield Police Department are childish and uncalled for.

Very true i don't see why using other resources is a big deal? If it weren't for out sourcing many house fires would turn into wide spread first fires. I say if you can use other resources be smart and use them wisely and that's is what was done and the man was caught in two hours which i thought was great before done people even started their day. Lets all work together for the same goal in the end we all want a safe neighborhood

Actually, many local jurisdications have the resources to handle this type of crime . However, it appears we are sadly lacking in resources in Plainfield. It is great to call in other towns to assist when we need them. But those towns have problems too, and if we don;t have what we need here how can we reciprocate when they call us? What happens when they have a priority matter and can't help? These questions are very problematic.

The time has come to get our state a "Right To Carry Law" enacted! The People of Illinois have waited far to long to protect themselves from these hoodlums our courts keep letting out! Maybe if a few of these criminals get some holes shot in their shits, they will begin to think twice before committing their crimes - if they live that is!

The only thing the passing of a "right to carry law" will lead to in situations like this is a lot more dead bodies to clean up, and not necessarily the bodies of criminals. Criminals are criminals because they prey on UNSUSPECTING, vulnerable victims, who even if armed, may not be physically or emotionally prepared to blow someone away, even if they're being attacked. If a woman (or any victim) is being attacked and manages to get access to her weapon but isn't prepared to use it, guess whose going to have the upper hand. It's not like taking self defense classes and hoping that what you learned kicks in when the moment comes.......if that gun gets into the attackers hands, that criminal is going to know very well how to use it and WILL NOT hesitate.

This is a horrific crime that has allegedly been committed and if this young man is found guilty then he should pay a serious consequence, however, the issue is much deeper than feeling sorry for victims or feeling defending criminals. I work in one of the largest maximum security department of corrections in the state and there is one thing that every day folks don't seem to get: a criminal isn't born overnight. There is a long path leading to a tragedy like this and it started a long time ago. There are plenty of opinions regarding who should be blamed but until we, as a community and a society start to do what we can, both individually and collectively, to be a part of the solution, then not a single one of us has a right to cast stones. This matter will be resolved in the court by those whose job it is to condemn and judge the actions of others, but even if Mr. Johnson is sentenced to a long time in prison, that will have no impact on the thousands of young people out there, 15 year olds, 10 year olds, 5 years olds even, who are on the very same path.

Somehow you haven't noticed that almost every call that involved the Plainfield PD this summer, involved the gun wielding criminals being LONG GONE by the time the police bothered to show up. Not only being long gone, but being able to drive through the core of downtown, and completely out of the town boundaries, only for the Joliet PD to finally get the job done.... AGAIN.
This past history, is EXACTLY why another department was called in. The Plainfield Chief simply can not afford another bungled call and expect to keep his job. Take a step back, and realize that the chief KNEW it would take a more professional department to actually get the job done. That is a serious internal problem.
So no, I do not 'hate' the police. I hate incompetence, which has been on full display within this particular department for quite some time now, and it is coming back to bite not them, but the rest of the residents of town. I would MUCH rather have the level of professionalism displayed by the Joliet PD in place at the Plainfield PD, but that will never happen until there is a leadership change to someone that puts the residents needs above their personal pet projects.
Crime(Burglaries) skyrocketed by 38% during 2011 in Plainfield, and this chief was focused not on preventing an existing problem, but was busy making national headlines with his blundered attempt to put rifles in schools. 2012 is on track to become even worse for Plainfield, and it isn't even over yet.

Ernie, the entire reason the Miranda warning is even there is because the Supreme Court of the United States forced it onto law enforcement as a response to these tactics(Miranda v. Arizona), and this is still a common tactic in police departments around the country.
Bar Associations across the entire country were organizing before this was passed to allow for a defense against these tactics, the resulting government franchised body was to become the basis for the creation of the 'Legal Services Corporation' which was eventually then created by the Nixon administration(ironic, isn't it)
You really need to get yourself some attorneys as friends, particularly defense attorneys, so you can ask them some of these questions. Your personal life experiences and knowledge are obviously inadequate to support the statements that you are making.
There was just a record setting settlement against the city of Chicago for these EXACT tactics, and it was often referred to in news reports as the 'blue wall of silence'. If it didn't happen anymore, the Legal Services Corporation would no longer exist.
Ernie Knight

Tim,
Wrong again. Miranda was to protect the 5th Amendment right against self-incrimination. Miranda had nothing to do with officers knowingly arresting innocent persons. READ the MIRANDA RIGHTS, Tim.
You are confusing "tactics" in obtaining confessions with knowingly false arrests. These are not the same thing. Knowingly making false arrests will get an officer fired, indicted and imprisoned.
"Blue wall of silence" is meaningless out of context. It may have nothing to do with a knowingly false arrest. It may have nothing to do with Miranda.
You are confusing and mixing concepts.
Someone with such great defense attorney friends should know that. But using these TACTICS may be great for smearing the police again.

Further, guns should be banned not only in school safes but in the United States. Handguns are easily concealed, engineered for maximum lethality, relatively inexpensive, and easy to acquire. The United States leads the world in homicides, suicides, and overall gun violence. Guns are unsafe in anyones hand. We don't need anymore guns.
Tim

I'm not talking about the miranda rights Ernie, I'm talking about the ACTUAL case that prompted them to exist in the first place. Since you obviously do not know that that was but one of four cases consolidated for the court, here is some reading material for you to educate yourself with;
https://bulk.resource.org/courts.gov/c/US/384/384.US.436.584.759-761.html
"This was the spirit in which we delineated, in meaningful language, the manner in which the constitutional rights of the individual could be enforced against overzealous police practices."
The 'overzealous practices' being referred to are when interrogations were conducted for the sole purpose of getting a confession, even in the face of absolutely no supporting evidence at all. When you read the case involved other than the pop-culture 'miranda' case, which was but a single case of four, you will have learned something new. I know that is a 200+ page report of the actual words of the Supreme Court, but try to keep an attention span long enough to read it a few times until you understand it.
Here are 12 Million more reasons;
http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-06-06/news/chi-aldermen-settle-iraq-war-protest-lawsuits-for-12-million-20120606_1_protest-aldermen-police-conduct
900 knowingly wrongful arrests, all at once, by Chicago police. called 'idiotic' by the court.
You don't get to claim 'wrong', for well established history just because you are unaware of it.

Tim,
The discussion was on police intentionally arresting innocent people, if you would like to check the thread. Your points regarding police abuses apparently have nothing to do with the original discussion. (Point me to the spot in the Miranda decision that says the police knew Miranda was innocent and then arrested him anyway.)
Police making an arrest based on probable cause where the person is subsequently actually innocent (not simply acquitted), is obviously not the same as intentionally arresting an innocent person. One is a mistake, one is a crime.
Ron,
Good to know your irrational opposition to firearms. So we should not only disarm the 8,000,000 trained, licensed concealed firearms carriers nationwide, but also the military, police, FBI, everybody, since "guns are unsafe in anyones hand"? Handguns are for "maximum lethality"? Your ballistic ignorance is stunning.
Ron

Ernie, Is it possible to make comments with calling Tim and I names on here?
Consider what happened in Australia after a crazed gunman killed 35 people in Port Arthur, Tasmania, in 1996.
The Australian federal government persuaded all states and territories to implement tough new gun control laws. Under the National Firearms Agreement (NFA), firearms legislation was tightened throughout the country. National registration of guns was imposed and it became illegal to hold certain long guns that might be used in mass shootings.
The gun ban was backed up by a mandatory buy-back program that substantially reduced gun possession in Australia.
The effect was that both gun suicides and homicides (as well as total suicides and homicides) fell. Importantly, while there were 13 mass shootings in Australia during the period of 1979--96, there have been none in the sixteen years since.
Stricter gun policy laws need to be enacted here in the United States. The U.S. has a high gun murder rate, whereas a country like England with strict gun controls has almost no gun murders and a very low murder rate. The police in England do not even carry guns with the exception of their special teams. I'm sure they don't put rifles in a safe in their high schools either. Perhaps you should take some time to educate yourself on gun violence.

@ron..hey bud you should watch sons of guns...they took a piece of metal pipe, and some wood with 2 wires and a 9 v battery...know what they made?..a rocket launcher....a piece of pipe,a small piece of wood and a rubber band? Know what ya got?....a gun...in order to remove guns you would have to remove the knowledge that lead travels fast when backed by exploding black powder...remember the very first guns? Primitive everything after that was more for looks and speed....if you rounded up all the legal guns...there would only be homemade non registered in known amount, and never know who has them..is all you would end up with...people make guns..there not beamed in from space...and people will continue to make guns..no matter what.

John,
"Criminal Justice" texts used by television advertised training sources, are likely NOT associated in any way with official law enforcement training. Illinois police academys use no such texts. I'm certain it's possible to find a book that says what you have related. I'm equally certain that it would not be a part of a State, Federal or municipal sanctioned law enforcement training.

Ernie, Is it possible to make comments without calling Tim and I names on here?

Wrong again, Ron. Since banning guns in Australia and England the rate of firearm crime has vastly INCREASED.
Since concealed carry has gone into effect in the US, now in 49 states, homicides and violent crimes have DECREASED. The FBI has no stake in this. Look at the FBI UCR numbers.
You know what works at stopping crazed gunmen? Armed, trained, licensed civilians. Why would you want to disarm women and the elderly and make them easy victims of violent predators?
Ron, people are judged on what they say. When you contradict all credible ballistics experts and your own previous posts with your opinions, you really cannot expect to be held in high regard.

The Second Amendment does not give citizens the right to keep and bear arms, but only allows for the state to keep a militia (National Guard). Individuals do not need guns for protection; it is the role of local and federal government to protect the people through law enforcement agencies and the military. Additional gun control laws are necessary to stop gun violence and limit the ability of criminals to obtain guns. More guns mean more violence.

@ Ron..ok well let's say someone came into your house right now..bam you hear the door..maybe you don't...look around...where exactly are the police? The military? Nowhere.its just you and the criminal....in your house, invading your freedom, your property...the guy comes at you..are the police there yet?..how are they going to know your being invaded....you going to ask the criminal to hold on while you call the police?...good luck bud...while this guy attacks you..the other guy that came with him gets your wallet, sees pictures of your kids, learns who your wife is..sees pictures of your kids school...you know gathering information on your family while robbing and beating you.....are the police, military there yet?....probably not but you might have the chance to call the cops, start and investigation, maybe catch the people who have all the information they need on you to blackmail you into keeping your mouth shut...and the police they will get to your case when they get a chance...military..chances are police are not contacting them either....label units how ever you want they are still people and the only way to maybe protect yourself is to have a police officer or military personnel live with you and be on guard 24/7 but even they a routine will most likely be followed and know what happens to routines..they get calculated and breached and used against the people with routines...the real reality of this world sucks but it is a reality....You would be left defenseless...

Once again our state lawmakers should be hanging their heads in shame that they continue to infringe our RIGHT to "...bear arms'', I am glad this story came out good. But if it had been me or my wife, he would be dead, and we would need to get the car cleaned, and might spend the night in jail...ALIVE.

You people digress! First...please use spell check. Then stay on subject. Thank you Neighbor, PPD & JPD for a job well done. 2nd amendment gives me the right to own firearms. Illinois law prevents me from legally carrying them with me concealed. Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Civility separates us from the animals. Punish the guilty after they have their day in court.

No Ron, more guns do not equate to more violence. I only hope that one day we will have the right to conceal/carry. There would be less crime. You never know who's carrying so therefore you might want to think before you act.

It is amazing to me that people think guns should be banned except for military and police...ok well. Let's look at that...military,full of guns, are not afraid to drone bomb people and kill em even innocent kids, military who has done more killing of people than any average citizen could ever imagine doing,Militaries known to take over whole counties,..The police...charges and known for brutality, murder coverups,misconduct....yeah these are the people we should be gun free from...lol have you really lost your mind....What protects you from them?...in a perfect world we need no guns but people's ideas vary from what is their perfect world and others need to protect themselves from others ideas.....it's not hard for someone set on destruction to make a homemade gun...prisoners make all kinds of things from the lid of a coffee cup.lol

All of you anti gun nuts should do yourselves a favor and type into YouTube or google homemade single shot pistol or homemade machine guns and you would be surprised what you would leave yourself up against not to mention the precise weapons the military has...lol...there is even homemade single shot pistols that shoot shotgun shells.lmao....just keep imagining your perfect world how you think it is and us people who live with reality and understand the real world full of murders, rapists, child abductors, home invaders, thieve, con artists, scammers, and when one of these kinds of people invade your liberties..us guns rights nuts will fully understand when you start packing heat or at least begin to understand where gun rights people are coming from...Even if I never own a gun or if I do I would never want guns banned from citizens..we are all only human we appoint labeled positions but in the end the people we appoint are humans too and some humans with derranged ideas make it into power and end up with too much of it.Guns are not only for hunting they are to protect yourself from some ass that wants to car jack you too and invade upon your personal freedom, safety, and liberties.....even government through out time has been know to prove its self sometimes to do criminal things against its citizens..."in the name of Public Safety" ..
