Pope to Resign: Good News for Catholic Church?

Take our poll and tell us what you hope will happen with the selection of Pope Benedict's successor.

Pope Benedict announced today he would resign on Feb. 28, citing age and infirmity as the reasons behind his decision.

His action makes him the second pope in history to leave the position voluntarily, rather than upon death.

We'd love to know what you think of this development and what it might mean for the Catholic church. Please answer our poll questions and feel free to offer your opinion in the comment box below.

I imagine there is a bit more to the story than just age and infirmity. The man has helped cover up one of the largest and longest crime sprees in history. He should be prosecuted and in thrown jail.
I have no hopes of the RCC waking up and becoming more "modern". They would have to admit that there is no god to do that. That would be the day!

Like the funny image online says "A man with a cape, bedazzled hat, and a disco stick says it's wrong to be gay. Seems legit..."
Raised Catholic, and since then I'm Agnostic. I'm not seeing how any of the RCC makes sense. It's all around a BOOK that has stories in it. Which then branched out into more rules, judgement, and nasty scandal .
It's a joke to me. And it's hard to take people serious who believe in all the hoopla around church, and for that matter religion in general.

MO is that it's really too bad some confuse religion with relationship with God thru Jesus. That's what God wants---a relationship with us---not a bunch of puppets following traditions and rules that have no meaning. I was raised in the RCC and it had no real meaning for me, either. So I went on a 5 year search, and found there's a lot more to this Person called God than I learned in the RCC. No offense meant to anyone in the RCC, but that's how it worked for me. Many have stayed in the CC and are very satisfied with it---different strokes for different folks. But don't get mad at me or judge me just because I left!! It's not the only church. We need to love and accept one another, and that includes agnostics and atheists. Let's resolve not to mock one another, or our chosen faith, as mature adults.

I respect people, but in no way do I respect faith. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and there isn't a shred of it out there. There's just as much evidence for the invisible dragon on my shoulder right now as there is for your favorite god friend.
I agree that we all need to get along, regardless of beliefs. The problem lies in people, especially those in powerful positions in society, pushing what they believe onto others. Leave me alone, and I'll leave you alone. Simple as that.

J. Ann, shall we do this again? If it wasn't for the Holy Roman Empire, and the Catholic Church you wouldn't have a Jesus to have a "relationship" with. You can deny it all you like, but yours is a man made religion just like all of the man made god/men myths that came before Jesus.

Born Catholic, raised Catholic, kicked to the curb by this pope's return to old pre-Vatican II law. Remarried, you see. Without the cash to pay for a "dispensation". I am glad to see him go, but I think the damage is done. Too many Catholics bailed on his archaic rules and rhetoric. Few will ever go back.

Usual? What, have you been following me around or something? I just started commenting on Patch articles. The Boy Scouts article is about human rights.
Heck, so is this really. If I'm a jerk for wanting everyone to be treated equally, then so be it.
I love how I'm accused of "jerkoff" comments by a man(I assume? Why the Anon?) who just insulted a whole gender.

Anonymous, perhaps if there were women priests there would be a lot less molestation of little boys. That's one thing the RCC has become infamous for over the years. And how does the Church usually handle these pedophiles...they council them and move them to a different parish where they can continue their perverted ways instead of being locked up like they would be if they didn't hide behind the sanctity of the Church. How disgusting is that? How can that be defended after so many young lives have been ruined. I'm sure there could be offenders in other religions, but it seems to be so prevalent in the Catholic Church. I've got to say that you need to come out of the recesses of the cave you live in & see the light!

everyone changes their tune about God and the Catholic Church when they are dying. all of you "touchy-feely do whatever makes you feel good" lapsed Catholics will be the first ones calling for a priest when you start to feel death breathing on your neck being agnostic allows people to not feel guilt about doing things they know are immoral like abortion and being Jewish. keep bad-mouthing the One True Church- and may God have mercy on your souls.

Is this the same Anon in all the articles? Why not register and show your name?
I'll take reality over comfort. I love the generalizing, too. "EVERYONE" changes their tune. Riiiiight.
Then we have the tired old argument that not being religious somehow makes you evil. Like you don't have morals or something.
Have you been paying attention to what all the MORAL priests have been doing to little boys?
I hope your post is in actuality a joke. A POE, if you will.

Anonymous is a good example of why the Catholic Church is in it's death throes. Hey, anonymous, know what? Jesus was a JEW. hahahahaha!!!!

The RCC Is best suited for those people who feel more comfortable with others making their decisions and deciding what they should or shouldn't know. Times evolve, the RCC hasn't. Its archaic ways are stiffling. I'm not having anyone force feed me hoopla that I find to be useless information. I believe in God, I believe in living a good life, and I do believe there is a spiritual life outside the RCC that God approves of. There isn't "one true church" that stands above the rest of the religions. So get over yourself, "Anon" and join those of us who think for ourselves rather than being lead around by the nose.
