Shackled Drew Peterson Taken to See Dead Mother at Funeral Home
Drew Peterson got 15 minutes with his mother's body.
Will County Sheriff's deputies escorted a shackled Drew Peterson to a Darien funeral home to see his mother's body for a last time, a source said.
Peterson had a brief visit with his deceased mother Thursday afternoon before he was returned to the Will County jail, where he has been locked up for the last three and a half years, the source said.
Peterson was at Modell Funeral Home in Darien for about 15 minutes, the source said.
Another source said Peterson was in tears while at the funeral home and under guard by several sheriff's deputies.
Peterson saw his mother before the public viewing.
Peterson's mother, Betty Morphey, died Monday at 84.
After Peterson's father, Donald Peterson, died, Morphey married Albert Morphey, who has also since died.
One of Albert Morphey's sons, Thomas Morphey, has said he helped Peterson carry a blue plastic barrel out of Peterson's Bolinbgbrook home the night Peterson's fourth wife, Stacy Peterson, disappeared in October 2007. Thomas Morphey said Stacy Peterson's body was in the barrel.
Thomas Morphey has also said his family long believed Peterson killed his third wife, Kathleen Savio. Savio was found drowned in a dry bathtub in March 2004.
Peterson was convicted last month of murdering Savio. His sentencing has been set for November 26.
Peterson, 58, faces up to 60 years in prison.
Betty Morphey's funeral was scheduled for tomorrow at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Darien.

Perhaps The Patch can gather the statistics on how many of these requests have landed on the the desk of the "powers that be" and how many were denied and what criteria is used to approve these requests. Former Gov. Ryan's was not released to attend his wife's funeral. And to think he was not charged with murder.

In January 2011 George Ryan WAS let out of prison and spent two hours visiting his wife. And in June 2011 when she passed away, George Ryan was actually at the family home and with his wife when she passed. That night, he was released for about 6 hours and participated in the decision to remove her from the respirator that had been keeping her alive.
The prisons bureau typically allows inmates to visit a person on their deathbed or attend their funeral — but not both.

Is it really 3 hots a day? Those prisoners get shit for food. They don't even get enough calories per day. They keep them weak and lethargic. I believe no matter what they have done they should be fed properly. They are humans. Its cruel punishment to starve them so the state can make money off of commissary items which are overly priced.

She NEVER attended ONE (1) court appearance for her LOVING son...Let me also remind you that DREW PETERSON is the ONE AND ONLY SUSPECT in the disappearance and most likely DEATH of STACY PETERSON because SHE KNEW DREW KILLED Kathleen so he felt he needed TO KILL HER TOO.... While prisoners are stripped of many of their civil rights, there are many protections still in place for prisoners per federal and state laws. After incarceration, unnecessary infliction of pain or causing an inmate psychological distress, constitutes cruel and unusual punishment forbidden by the Eighth Amendment. Typically, however, the courts will rule in favor of prison establishments curtailing civil rights to maintain order.
Inmates are allowed to apply for emergency leave to attend a wake or funeral of an immediate family member. It is up to the court to approve or deny this request.
These requests are applied for and approved all the time, however, we only hear about the cases that are very public.

I cannot stand the man, but, as far as I am concerned, he lost his mother, and he should be allowed to say a goodbye to her. Plus, he gets to live with the memory that his last time spent with his Mother was while he was dressed in prison orange and in shackles. Proud moment for him, I’m sure. Does that satisfy the haters?
Kelly is technically right and does not deserve the name calling. Until someone is formally sentenced (different than a conviction) and begins serving their time, they are sometimes allowed the freedom to go home and get their affairs in order. Blago had several months to live at home AFTER sentencing before being required to report to Prison to begin serving time. If a person is not determined to be a flight risk or a danger to society, or at risk of being murdered themselves if they are allowed freedom, they are allowed to be out of jail even after being convicted of a crime. Drew might be a flight risk, but I suspect the bigger concern is some nut case executing him. However; since he was not formally serving a sentence, he is allowed more freedom (if you can call being shackled at a funeral home that) then if the clock had started on his punishment. Ryan, on the other hand, was in the process of serving his time, and therefore was under a different standard in regards to what he was allowed – he was under the jurisdiction of the federal penal system. Until Peterson is formally sentenced and begins serving time, he isn’t.

Vera: the speed with which you spew ignorance is exhausting to read. Peterson, like any prisoner, whether convicted or not, can be granted permission to visit an IMMEDIATE family member's funeral IF, he has the money to pay the fee. In the county where I work, the rate is currently $700. So, you could be a pre-trial detainee on a misdemeanor drug charge and if you don't have the money to go to your mother's funeral, then you don't have the money and that's the end of the story.

i am involved in a prison Ministry and i do see inmates get to go to view a parents body or to the funeral.
But the inmates family or someone has to pay$$$ for the transportation and the officers which could amount to thousands of dollars and most cannot afford this.
But i believe this is standard for most prisons with all things considred of the inmate.
he was out for only a few hours, he's back in jail.
I just always think about if the shoe was on the othe foot scenario.
