The Shorewood Village Board signed off on putting the money collected off its 911 surcharge into a common fund with 52 other Will County police and fire departments.

"As in past years, the WESCOM fire and police departments wish to pool their resources to achieve a greater degree of public safety in our communities," Police Chief Aaron Klima said in a memo to Mayor Rick Chapman and the village trustees.

The Shorewood Police Department is kicking $11,648.44 into the 2012 fund. This was less than 2.5 percent of the $480,968.61 taken in by contributing Will County police departments and less than 1.3 percent of the near million dollars in combined police and fire funds.

The Troy Township Fire Department is putting in$14,296.65.

During Tuesday night's village board meeting, Klima called the measure a "housekeeping issue," and the trustees seemed to agree, unanimously voting in favor of the police chief's recommended action.

Trustees Dan Anderson and James "Mac" McDonald both noted that Shorewood has been able to obtain much greater service for its money than if they decided to forego the intergovernmental agreement.
