Shorewood-Troy Library Board to Vote on Referendum

Board meets on Thursday and is likely to vote on whether or not to ask voters for a tax increase.

The Shorewood-Troy Library has spend the past few months getting input from the public on what they would like to see in a new building. They have outgrown their current space and have been working to purchase about 5 acres near Shorewood Village Hall. But, the library only has enough cash in reserve to buy the land. To build on it, they have to turn to voters.

On Thursday night, the Shorewood-Troy Library Board of Trustees will vote on whether or not they want to ask voters for a referendum to pay to build a new building on the land.

Library director Jenni Mills told Patch back in April that the library knew that at some point they were going to have to ask voters for help.

In December, the library was still hosting meetings so residents could weigh in. At the time, the library intended to ask the taxpayers for an increase when they go to the polls in April.

Mills said in all of the feedback about design and desires of the new library, residents did not complain about the possible referendum.

"We didn’t really hear any anger or upset about the tax law," she said.

The board meets at 7 p.m., at the library, 650 Deerwood Dr. in Shorewood.

Our pay checks are about to get smaller with the social security tax rate going up from 4.2 to 6.2. Illinois pension reform is going to take money from us in one way or another, seniors who are on a fixed income may not be able to afford the average tax hike of $200.00 on their property tax for a new library. There are people who still owe more then their house is worth, and the last thing they need is a $200.00 increase on their tax bill for a new library. We already have a library that looks to be in sound shape and I cannot justify supporting this referendum for a new library, I will be voting NO in April.

My taxes are going up, medical going up, Medicare went up, and I resent a huge 361% Library Tax Increase. In this horrible economy, this is unrealistic and irresponsible. Buy the land and wait for a recovery to ask for Millions.

Why do this now? People can't afford it.

Didn't hear any anger or upset about the tax!?!?! My ass look back at the last story on the patch about this... I believe there was something like 2 dozens comments against the idea of getting taxed more. I'm sure if people didn't have to work so many hours to just try to get by there would of been more opposition to this idea at the meetings. The people at the library really need to rethink this idea. This is not the time to be asking people for more money they cannot afford to just give away for something like this. I urge everyone to vote no on this in April, I also urge the library board to vote no on this at this time. This idea would be better if postponed until people can afford it. I mean COME ON...if you can't afford to build it what makes you think we can?

Maybe they should have thought about where they were gonna get their money from before the village built a veterns memorial expecting people to shell out $100 per brick.

Looks to me like they aren't looking for much publicity, because when most people see the cost, they will know this is outrageous, and vote NO on this ridiculous referendum in this day and age.

Being a retiree and just getting by I think this is outrageous. We all know many people that have lost their homes when the banks refused to help them out. How about if the library employees give a % of their paycheck to pay for this. What happened to Kohls and the restaurants, etc that were suppose to be built by the new village hall building, now nothing but an empty field? Go away library referendum. I have faith in the Shorewood residences this will NOT pass.

I agree with Nora. We do not need a library right now. The cost is too high. We are already getting a water bill increase. I will vote a big fat NO!
