SWAT Team Responds to Gunshots in Plainfield Township

“Alcohol played a role” in early morning incident, police said.

Two men were arrested early Sunday after making an alcohol-fueled decision to fire off some rounds with a semi-automatic pistol in a Plainfield Township backyard, police said.

Hank M. Robinson, 25, is charged with reckless discharge of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and not having a firearm owner’s identification (FOID) card following the incident at his home at 23542 W. Bentley Dr., located near Bronk and Caton Farm roads.

Sign up for the Plainfield Patch newsletter.

A second man, Carmen R. Nero III, 33, of the 2800 block of Warren Dorris Drive in Joliet, was also arrested on charges of reckless discharge of a firearm and lacking a FOID card, according to Will County Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas.

No one was hurt in the incident, according to police.

Kaupas said Joliet police received a call around 3:30 a.m. from neighbors who said shots had been fired at the residence.

Upon arriving, Joliet police discovered Robinson, clad only in shorts and a T-shirt, in the backyard.

Robinson, who refused to cooperate with police, had apparently been locked out of the home.

Kaupas said the other individuals at the house had shut the door behind Robinson and locked it. According to police, five adults and one child were inside the home. Kaupas said he did not know the age of the child.

After realizing the Plainfield Township home was under the jurisdiction of the Will County Sheriff’s Department, Joliet police contacted the sheriff’s office, Kaupas said.

After the occupants of the home failed to answer their telephones and would not come out of the house, Will County’s Special Operations Group (SOG) responded to the scene and took up tactical positions, Kaupas said.

“It’s what you would call a SWAT team,” he added, but noted that the extra firepower wasn’t necessary. At around 6 a.m., an SOG member using a bullhorn ordered the occupants to leave the home, and they finally complied.

The adults were interviewed at the Will County Sheriff’s Department investigative office, where investigators determined Robinson and Nero were responsible for firing the weapon.

“One or both of them admitted they were intoxicated and decided to fire some shots in the backyard,” Kaupas said, adding one round may also have been fired inside the house. “Alcohol played a role in this.”

Investigators recovered 13 shell casings from a .22-caliber semi-automatic pistol.

Though an initial search of the house failed to turn up the gun, detectives who interviewed Robinson and Nero learned the weapon had been stashed in the attic. It was later recovered by investigators, Kaupas said.

Despite the tactical response, police don’t believe the occupants of the home were in any real danger, according to Kaupas.

“They weren’t shooting at each other,” he said. “There was no indication of an argument.”

Because a child was present at the home, Kaupas said the Department of Children and Family Services was called in to assist following the incident.

The early-morning stunt could send Robinson back to prison, police said. According to Illinois Department of Corrections records, he was paroled in April 2012 after serving 15 months on a conviction for multiple burglaries.

He also did time after a 2006 conviction for damaging property, according to IDOC.

Plainfield Township has well water and Will County police and Village of Plainfield has Plainfield water and Plainfield Police they both have 5 digit address. if an address has 3 or 4 digits its not plainfield. Plainfield school dist is 65 sq miles the lines were done up many many moons ago when most of the area was farm land. Plainfield South High School dose not have any one going there from Plainfield.

Here's another stretch story that has nothing to do with 'Plainfield'. Apparently there is nothing else going on in Plainfield to report.

Shannon - how about some more reporting on the elected boards in the area which the readers pay property taxes to? You have yet to report on one board meeting outside of the Plainfield Village Board which is about 6% of the share of property taxes. Why ignore the the remaining 94%?

Perhaps you should take the time to read what I actually wrote. I never said one thing about an election. That shows just how misguided and illiterate you actually are. The stories 'reported' on in the Plainfield Patch have a continuous theme of being 'outside' of Plainfield. Yet when do we actually hear about the school board, the fire department, library, and the township boards which consume very large amounts of our property tax bills. Yet there is continued discussion of Tony's finer foods in Joliet and other restaurants opening and closing and 'rumors' of Trader Joes coming to Plainfield. You shouldn't ignore facts when it is for your convenience.

What happened to the journalism of reporting the news rather than creating it?

True Enough...Distracted by the Playoffs...but since the Patch doesn't get our Tax Money I guess they report on what they want to. I do like to hear what is happening in the Village along with the Township so I have no issue with this story. I also believe it is called the Plainfield Patch not the Plainfield Village Patch.

They can report what they want and a large amount of the money they receive is done through their advertising space here on the site. The continued ignoring of news reporting can only be solved by not supporting the businesses advertised on this site.

It is called the Plainfield Patch - so why isn't there any reporting on the Plainfield School District, the Plainfield Fire Department, the Plainfield Library, or the Plainfield Township Board? These boards are all inside and outside of Plainfield and fit this Patch site, yet there is no reporting on any of these elected bodies which were selected by the readers and paid for by the readers.

I have no idea what map you are looking at.

Here are the corporate boundaries of Joliet (scroll down quite a bit, on the left side of the page)
http://www.city-data.com/city/Joliet-Illinois.html

As for why it is called 'plainfield' by the residents, I would guess it has to do with the way these homes were advertized when they were initially built. Big, giant signs, with flags blowing all over the place, with bold letters proclaiming PLAINFIELD, and small letters below 'schools'.

The USPS says it is 'plainfield' because that defines the post office that mail for that are is sorted through. It has absolutely nothing to do with town boundaries, and everything to do with the location of the post office.

The fact, is that this house and your house is within the corporate limits of the city of Joliet.

It's getting old "Ron" and "eyes" and the rest of the "positively Plainfield" folks who like to complain about stories on here that don't conform to their narrow definition of Plainfield, so here's a little history lesson.

What has historically been called "Plainfield" has never been confined to the corporate village limits. In fact, areas as far away as Clow Airport and Barber's Corners to the NE and western Troy Twp. to the SW were considered as being in Plainfield (it's why many of these areas have Plainfield postal addresses - and, on some maps Clow is still listed as being in Plainfield). Plainfield has always been defined by the village, the township, and the school district, all with differing borders. Besides a couple encroachments by Joliet in the 70s, this was pretty much the status quo until all of the post-1990 tornado annexations by neighboring towns (and the inaction of our own elected officials).

So, when these areas outside of the "village of Plainfield" are described as Plainfield, it has nothing to do advertising. It's because historically, and according to the post office, it's where they've always been. And all your whining and complaining isn't going to change that.

Thanks Shannon and all at Patch for keeping ALL of Plainfield informed.

I am so sick of people (Ron) complaining about the 'boundaries.' This is within Plainfield township, Plainfield school district, and the park district. Are you that much if a NIMBY the you don't recognize that things happening in the community don't necessarily happen conveniently within the village limits? I have live in Jo-field for 21 years...I shop in Plainfield, my kids go to school in Plainfield, they play sports in Plainfield. Go stick your head back in the sand and pretend that what happens in the larger community doesn't impact your own safety, concern and property values. I do appreciate the coverage of board meetings as well, but if I'm that concerned about what's going on, I would haul my butt to the public meetings myself to get my questions answered.

Carrie I'm sorry that your brother's antics have landed him in the news...again. But really? You focus on his being locked out of the house as his offense? The police were called because of shots fired. In a residential area. At the house where a known felon lives. In the middle of the night. Anyone with an ounce of common sense would call the police. He will be held accountable for his behavior - again - and thank God for 'nosey' neighbors in the suburbs who don't think this type of behavior is normal or acceptable. If he wants to move out to the country and shoot up his back yard in the middle of the night, he has my blessing. The raccoons and skunks might not appreciate it though.

I puzzled why it is such a big deal there TB PLFD. The address is NOT Joliet, so by your own rules it should not make the Joliet Patch. Whatever Police Department responds will tell you what city it is in or if it is unincorporated. Police are the primary responders in their jurisdiction. Plainfield Police don't respond to Plainfield South H.S. because it is in Joliet. Their maps have the official boundaries.

A felon firing a weapon in a residential neighborhood is not anyones business? How are people not to be concerned? Just because it happens in Chicago doesn't make it right. This defense of "mind your own business" is the saddest and dumbest thing I've ever heard. When you need to testify as a character witness for your brother tell the judge it was none of his business and see where that gets you.

Its just ridiculous how people advocate and enable this sort of behavior - regardless of the situation your brother broke the law - AGAIN.

Maybe you would be better suited telling us your "business" so we can see how you are justifying these actions of your brother whom I know nothing about .... besides what I see in his public record of criminal activity - 2 convicted counts of burglaryand that he hasn't been on parole from Sheridan even a year yet!?!

You have a serious problem. There are no very few students at South from Crest Hill. Those children go to Central. There are residents of incorporated Plainfield who do go to South. Some by choice, some by boundary. Maybe they wanted to escape the ever growing Heroin problem at Central. Wake up. There is a lot of crime going down on the North side of Plainfield. If you & Ron want to pretend like it doesn't exist go ahead. As far as demographics go both areas are very similar in makeup. A slight advantage in college education & income go to the area you don't like. A disadvantage to crime rates goes to the area you love. I would love for all of the people who live off of Caton Farm Rd to stop shopping, dining, & spending money in Plainfield. Do you know who supports local businesses in Plainfield like Tischlers, Peter Rubi's, MoeJoe's, Eich's, Uptown tap, Cathy's Sweet Creations, Taphouse, etc.....? The people you hate. Do you know where people on the North side of town shop- Naperville.

A stray bullet could have entered a home and ultimatley struck someone resulting in injury or death. The merit of the case is just that . . . did he or did he not break the law being in possession of a gun and choosing to fire the weapon? The fact a gun was fired in a community putting others at risk CLEARLY makes it everyone elses business. Your failure to notice that simply baffles me.

On April 7, 2010, state police pulled Robinson over near Interstates 80 and 55 and found a cash register and money drawers in his backseat while a break-in was being reported at a salon on Jefferson Street.

Robinson admitted to 14 burglaries in Joliet, Plainfield, Minooka, Romeoville, Lockport, Channahon and Shorewood during a four-month spree. He and his accomplices used a rock or brick from the parking lot to smash a window or glass door at hair salons, nail salons, auto parts stores and tobacco shops.

Robinson was sentenced to five years in prison and released from the Sheridan Correctional Center in April. He also served a year for vandalism in Will County in 2006.
In Sept. 2000, Nero was reportedly driving a Camaro near Scott and Jackson streets in Joliet when he drifted into another lane. A honking horn allegedly angered Nero’s passenger to scream obscenities and “flip off” another driver — who turned out to be the then-director of the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad.

Nero was charged with improper lane usage and unlawful use of a weapon after a set of brass knuckles were found in the Camaro, reports said. His passenger was not cited
I think the person who own the guns should be charged also because there is no way these two felons should been around guns.

Ron, it really doesn't make a difference whether or not people "know where they live" or not. The issue is that for a violent criminal, the world is their litterbox and it would do you good to take your blinders off. The Sun Times and Tribune report on stories that take place in Indiana, why? to sell papers and because Indiana is in Chicago's backyard. Most major city newspapers have a "world" section where they run stories about what goes on .....wait for it....IN THE WORLD. Its in each citizens best interest to have an understanding of what happens not only where we live but where our neighbors live, as well as the issues that affect our fellow human beings who live on the other side of the world.
When the tragedy of 9/11 occurred, the average citizen had never even heard the name Osama Bin Laden, even though his name appeared in the Chicago Sun Times the day before. My 17 year old son blurted out of nowhere the other day, "did you know the U.S. unemployment rate is down?". I asked him how he knew and he said, "Oh, I get a beep on my phone from my New York Times app every time there's an important story". I wish I had been that much of a global citizen at that age!

I am grateful to the writers of Plainfield Patch for all the the great stories they put out on a daily basis. We are all part of the Plainfiels community, and we should all want to be informed. I don't care what the post office says if it's Plainfield or Joliet. One thing that does bother me about all this "what town are they in?" is that Emergency responders always have to figure out who's jurisdiction it's in before they can send help. There is time lost "while they figure it out" and could make an Emergency Situation even worse because of the delay. THAT is something I would like to see addressed.
As for the gunman, I DO care that someone was shooting a gun in their backyard less than 50 yards from another house where innocent people could be hurt or killed from a ricochet or stray bullet. It's one thing if you live on a farm miles away from anyone else, but this in the middle of a dense subdivision with lots of houses close together. I'm sorry, but he did something illegal and should face the consequences.

If you don't want a worldwide audience of people talking about the dumb thing you were involved in immediately after it happened... DON'T DO DUMB THINGS.

Does your educationally challenged family member understand that a neighbor with a gun, that reasonably felt threatened for his or someones life, could have shot him dead on the spot in his backyard?

Luckily, he has neighbors that live under the rule of law, and they contacted the police after getting themselves to a safe location, instead of gun-happy neighbors that would be itching to use their weapon in 'self-defense'.

Seeing as how I live in PLAINFIELD and this ridiculous behavior happened less than a half mile from home, I don't care what the hell town it ACTUALLY is, I want to know about it! Everyone stop your crybaby pissing and moaning and grow the hell up! The stories on the Plainfield Patch are supposed to inform Plainfield (AND Plainfield Township) residents what's happening in their community. Since many of us live near Joliet, I don't see why this is a bad article. If you don't like the articles posted here, don't read the Plainfield Patch you pansies!!

7500? That's it? I'm disappointed.

Freedom of speech is the constitution....you can't buy that at Walmart with your camo snuggie.

There is an age old saying "you will never meet a smart criminal"

While we discuss which town this actually happened in, why was it posted in this paper, laugh or joke about the mental stability of the people involved, has anybody realized that this happened a few houses and across a street from a grade school? Where children walk to school, go out for recess to play. We are a few weeks past what just happened in Newtown, Ct a tragedy we could not take in. The Aurora Co. shooting, again, unbelievable, right? Here but for the grace of God, we have a situation that was thwarted at the forefront instead of reeling in the aftermath of a tragedy.

I don't know what the answers are, or if there are any answers. I appreciate the men and women who protect our communities risking their lives just going to work. I wonder about the circumstances that brought this family to the degree of disconnect from society and denial that they are at. I hold out hope that as a society we can come to a time where we can become a proactive team in facing the disfunction of the society we live in and positively bann together to make things better, Somehow. Wishful Thinking.

Wouldn't this be three strikes since it's his third time being locked up for being a menace to society? Too bad they don't put him in for 25 years.

JOLIET — Police arrested 10 drug dealers and seized more than 23 pounds of heroin and cocaine during a recent investigation, authorities said.

Some $232,000 was also recovered during “Operation Red Baron,” a joint operation between the Joliet Narcotics Unit and the FBI, Joliet Chief Mike Trafton said.

Another great bit of writing from Shannon now like I've said in the past if we all had as much passion for rasing our children as we do for ripping on each other and they're beliefs we just might not have stories such as these to comment on
