UPDATED: Crash Near Shorewood Shuts Down I-80
Two people were injured, one of whom was flown to the hospital via helicopter.
A rollover accident with serious injuries shut down both sides of Interstate 80, west of Interstate 55 near Shorewood, for a short time late Thursday afternoon.
Two people were reported injured, one of whom was flown to a local hospital via Lifestar helicopter, Illinois State Police said.
All lanes were reopened by 6:45 p.m., police said.
Initial reports indicated there were two vehicles involved in the crash, but that's since been corrected. No details on the cause of the accident have been released yet.

Not surprised. A lot of people think the speed limit is 80 MPH on I-80! It's actually 65! So, if you're barreling down I-80 at 80 MPH gabbing on your phone, one bad move can get you in a pickle!

I drive it every day and what is even more frightening is the semi's that do 80 and run you off the road. Try riding on the Joliet bridge with one riding your bumper @75 mph and see how fast you have to go to get away from him. How many semi's do you see getting pulled over? 0, I think it's time for the SP to start getting them and maybe the cars will slow down. No one wants an 8 wheeler running over them. Just a thought!

Completly agree about the semi's, I feel like I'm going to get killed by a semi right by the bridge aleast twice a week. It would be nice to see one of the pulled over

I hear you both, but it was right near the I55 ramp east bound lane. Those ramps have a pretty good curve, and there is barely an opportunity to merge for those merging onto I80 or getting off going I55, and people not familiar with the quickness of that dangerous intersection can cause easy traffic issues. The west bound ramps aren't like that, only the eastbound. The west bound lanes were closed to allow the medivac to land.

I agree about those eastbound ramps. I thought I read last year that they were going to reconstruct them during the construction and I was very disappointed when it did'nt happen. Poor planning on our states part. But then we are in Illinois which is broke because of corruption.

I have a tendency to piss off all other drivers when driving....I drive the speed limit. Maybe if the state police wrote more tickets to the truckers, bus drivers and idiots on crotch rockets we could pay down some of our states debt.

I piss of other drivers by doing only 15 MPH over the limit and pass no one! The game of the road now days is just to pass some one no matter how fast the guy ahead of you is going. Anybody who gets pulled over for speeding has a good excuse... "everybody else is speeding!" And they're right! Everybody IS but only a very small percentage get caught. This is why states are looking to pass "nanny laws" to install speed violation cameras. You ask for this every time you think you need to do 20 MPH and more over the limit. What's your big freaking hurry anyway?

The bridge that a couple of the above posters are talking about, I totally agree, the speed limit is 45 on that bridge and even if your doing 55 people and semi's are on your bumper. It's ridiculous!!!!!!! I really wish the SP would patrol over there more. Hope nobody was injured beyond a recovery, will praying for the people involved.

Here is the real story as I was driving behind the small pickup truck. The pickup had a problem and should not have been on the road! The pickup was passing the semi at 70+, there was a loud thumping noise which I could hear in my car. The shocks or rear axle was jumping around. Clearly, the driver should have pulled his broke truck over, instead decided to drive at a high rate of speed taking our lives in his hands. I knew this noise was not right so I got out of the way and passed him before parts started flying at me. Just as I got around him, he swerved into the left lane and then lost control and was sideways into the right lane. He then proceeded to roll the truck several times into the grass and weeds toward the baseball fields. I called 911. The semi pulled over, possibly because debris may have hit his truck or to help. He was not the cause of this accident! The 2 guys in the pickup chose their fate by not pulling over. English may not have been their first language to be politically correct.

The odds of getting caught and ticketed for speeding on an Illinois state highway, Tollway or Interstate are 1 in 20,000. With odds like this, why comply with the speed laws? That's why everybody speeds. No fear of getting caught!
