Why a New Library? Shorewood Director Answers Questions
Jennie Cisna Mills, director of Shorewood-Troy Library, outlines how bonds will be sold and paid off over 20-25 years to build a new library if residents support a tax increase.
In the spring edition of "Reading Between the Lines," a publicatoin for patrons of the library, Shorewood-Troy Public Library director Jennie Cisna Mills answers the question, "Why a new library building?"
Residents will be asked to vote on a proposed tax increase to build the library on April 9. The cost of the new library is estimated at $21 million.
"We estimate that for the average home in Shorewood the cost would be about $20 a month—less than a hardback book, half the cost of a video game, much less than the cost of having the internet in your home," Cisna Mills said in her "From the Director" letter.
She said she will be happy to answer questions. Call her at 815-725-1715.

I will absolutely vote NO. We already have a functioning library. You want people to drop their internet so we can drive back and forth to the library? That justifies adding over $200.00 to our property tax bills? Gas is almost $4.00 a gallon. Our paychecks got smaller because of the Social Security increased tax rate. They will almost certainly get even smaller when the State of Illinois fixes the pension mess. How do you justify a more then triple increase on our library tax? You have people on fixed incomes, you have people who owe more on their house then its worth, you have senoirs who may not be able afford to have an extra $200.00 + added to their tax bills, and then you have people who NEVER have been to the library and are asking all of them to pay an extra $200.00+ per year for something they don't use. No, this is the digital age, not the brick & mortar age. Most tax increases we have no control to stop, but this Library Referendum Question to increase our taxes we do have control over, and I urge voters to vote NO on the Referendum question April 9th.

Just look at the library New Lenox built too big and a drain on the tax payers. I have lived in Shorewood for 15 years if you want a new one you pay for it. Or why not put it in the Shorewood Building they put on 52 a waste of money and empty.

Exactly, lots of empty space there. I like how Miss Jennie says only $20 a month. Thats breaking it to us gently cuz she's not stating how much "a year" your taxes will increase. VOTE NO, NO,NO

Also your logic of video games, hardback books, and internet service to justify a $21 million library is poor.

Couldn't agree more with the two of you. These people are a joke, trying to say Games and internet are worth this moronic library. Why does every little piss ant town need to spend millions on public projects? Then turn around and try to get the money from the residents. Just like with the sales tax increase..."It will mostly affect those passing through town." Well I don't know about you but I do most of my shopping in town because gas is to expensive to shop anywhere else. Now in my book that affects me alot. So they give people a tiny rebate for that increase...what about those that are not home owners in the village? They didn't get squat back. Therefore it affected more then out of towners passing through. VOTE NO ON THE LIBRARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So if I call to ask why they are so stupid and why they can't fund this themselves without taxpayer money will I get a answer?

The average is $280 a year not $200. They want a 261% tax increase!!! NUTS!!!! The new Village Hall that they called TOO EXPENSIVE cost $12 M. And current space is VERY poorly utilized. These board members should all be fired, starting with the Head Librarian.

Spread the word to your neighbors-VOTE NO-because the govt and The Patch isn't going to tell people the REAL cost. When I take my kids there now it is like a ghost town

Your right, we need to tell our neighbors how their taxes are going to increase if this passes. A lot of people didn't even know about this referendum, as there has been very little said. We need to get everyone we know to vote, as this could be a low turnout, and I think that would be to their advantage, and it could be close. Also, I too have gone to the library last spring, and it was pretty empty.

This will leave another "empty" building in Shorewood if the library referendum passes. VOTE NO...NO...NO...the less it is discussed the better the chances of passing it. If the voters aren't aware of a another tax increase they won't flock to the polls to vote against it. Inform the voters in Shorewood.

$20 a month is justification for a new library building? There is unused space in the existing building, use the community room in the basement, or the "work" space upstairs. What this village does not need is another "taj mahal" public building that is largely empty space. 20 million for a building that now needs more employees, more utilities and on and on. Get off our backs.
