JCA Rings In Spring

Joliet Catholic Academy held its annual Spring Concert.

Under the direction of music teacher Joyce Kelstrom, Joliet Catholic Academy recently held its annual Spring Concert in the Student Activity Center. The overall theme was music favorites from Broadway, Disney, pop artists, classical and the movies. Highlighted were performances from five handbell groups — two beginning groups, one intermediate group and one advanced group — and the Handbell Club. “The Handbell Club is composed of seniors who come in during their lunch period and eighth period to ring because they like to,” Kelstrom said. “This is the first year JCA has had a Handbell Club.” One of the musical highlights was the combined Handbell Club playing, Tapestry singing and Kelstrom playing the handbell solo on “My Heart Will Go On” …

Dark Shadows Casts a Long Shadow

Johnny Depp delivers a memorable, Van Winkle-esque performance

Has Johnny Depp ever turned in a poor performance? If so, I’ve never seen it. Whether he’s channeling Keith Richards (Pirates of the Caribbean), Hunter S. Thompson (The Rum Diaries), Ed Wood or even Edward Scissorhands, Depp always turns in a wonderful performance, and in Dark Shadows he again demonstrates his remarkable acting prowess. Depp is easily the best actor of his generation, sporting the intelligence and depth of Laurence Olivier, the suave charm of Adolphe Menjou and the humorous potential of Charlie Chaplin. He does whore himself out with the endless Pirates train of sequels, but hey, in some ways, we all have to sell out somehow. Even Orson Welles pimped wine (when it was time). I arrived at the Cinemark Louis Joliet Theater a…

Avenging Adventure

Crowds and the film’s length challenge the drama of "Avengers."

Usually I wait until later in the review to mention the overall time at the movies, but this week extenuating circumstances and a huge crowd of fans did affect our experience (I went with my three kids). But don’t worry, we still enjoyed it. Heading out to the Louis Joliet Cinemark was an adventure. A carnival in the mall parking lot snarled up traffic, and opening night of this spring’s blockbuster The Avengers meant a longer line than usual to get into the theater. Even though I ordered tickets online a day in advance, we still had to queue up behind four generations of moviegoers, which was cool. The last time I saw this many people at the theater was for Chronicle, but far and away the crowd at that one was around age 16 (despite its R…

This is Impossible!

"Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" owns Shorewood.

It's three weeks at the top now for Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. That's incredible! Shorewood loves this movie. We hope Redbox has their kiosks stocked with enough discs to keep the people of Shorewood satisfied. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol has been in first for so long, we don't even know what else there is to say about it. So we'll just get on with it and give you the list:

Sick, Silly Shorewood Rewind

Shorewood's got a serious case of being fantastic.

It's too bad Shorewood's greatness can't be bottled and shared with other, less great towns. Some scientist or doctor should figure out a way to do this, to maybe develop a Shorewood serum that can be injected into other towns, like a steroid or a vaccine. We can always hope. In the meantime let's take a look at the wonder of Shorewood with another SHOREWOOD REWIND: A British robot lady read the true crime sensation Fatal Vows: The Tragic Wives of Sergeant Drew Peterson, by all-around great guy Joe Hosey. Dave Wilson really liked The Raven. A distraught Shorewood woman has put up a $2,000 reward for the return of her missing cat, Casper. House Hunt! Burrito Express was the Mother's Day brunch Readers' Choice award winner.

The Raven Still Sits in Greatness

Cusack and crisp dialogue make this a moody classic.

The Raven isn’t really based on Edgar Allan Poe’s famed poem of the same name. Rather, it’s a sendup of his best writing, a greatest hits compendium of the macabre, murderous plotlines that Poe weaved into his short stories. Fellow English majors take note: This flick alludes to a libraryful of Poe’s works, many of which are quoted outright by John Cusack (who plays Poe here). The Masque of the Red Death, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Cask of Amontillado and a bunch of others are referenced in this picture, the stylishness of which is going to create a whole new generation of Poe fans. The eloquent dialogue here is both crisp and rife with sarcasm, in a dark, 19th-century way. For instance, Poe refers to fellow bar patrons as “mouth-…

I am hearing from a lot of people that they like(d) Poe, so I am surprised Hollywood hasn't made more movies out of his works? Especially in this era of remake madness.   more ›

Shakespeare For A Day At JCA

Joliet Catholic Academy celebrated Shakespeare's 448th birthday with a festival of food and performances.

Good food. Amazing entertainment. That is how Sheila Fry, teacher and chair of the English Department, promoted Joliet Catholic Academy’s annual William Shakespeare festival, which was held April 19 in honor of Shakespeare’s 448th birthday. JCA’s seniors, the Class of 2012, hosted the day-long event that featured reenactment of scenes, soliloquies and music from a myriad of Shakespeare’s 37 plays, 154 sonnets and several poems. Adept at writing tragedies and comedies, Shakespeare is regarded as one of the world’s most influential playwrights and dramatists. The seniors from Fry’s and Scott Allgood’s classes were in charge of bringing that legacy to life for the students, faculty and staff of JCA — a task that Fry loves to watch unfold. “I …

What Joe Hosey Thinks

Want to Hear a British Robot Lady Read the Book 'Fatal Vows' by Joe Hosey?

Well now you can.

Have you ever felt the urge to hear a female robot read the true crime sensation Fatal Vows: The Tragic Wives of Sergeant Drew Peterson by me, Joe Hosey? Well you can satisfy that urge now on YouTube. That's right, YouTube! For absolutely no cost at all you can go to YouTube and listen to a robot with a British accent read "an audio book summary of FATAL VOWS: The Tragic Wives of Sergeant Drew Peterson by JOSEPH HOSEY," which, by the way, is me. And we like how it sounds. In fact, we're thinking about getting in touch with that robot about doing a spoken word for some of the stuff on this site.

Impossible Dream: 'Mission Impossible' Repeats in Shorewood

The latest "Mission Impossible" movie claimed a second week at the top in Shorewood.

Shorewood's favorite Redbox movie rental for a second week in a row was Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. And not only was it the most popular movie rental, the Blu-Ray edition came in at No. 8. That's unprecedented! Shorewood just can't get enough of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, apparently. Well, good for Shorewood. We told you last week what Dave Wilson thought about it. And we have to admit, we didn't see it ourselves. But whatever. We watched the first one and thought it was really boring. To tell you the truth, we never even liked the reruns of the old TV show when we were kids either. So that's on you, Shorewood. Here's the list:

Readers' Choice: Another Crown For Jewel

Jewel is Shorewood's first two-time Readers' Choice winner.

A cold beer's not the only thing you can get at Jewel. Jewel's also apparently where you (the readers) choose to go when you choose to go somewhere to buy flowers in Shorewood. That's right — Jewel is again the Readers' Choice. It's the first time someplace has won the Readers' Choice twice. Congratulations Jewel. Somebody ought to buy you some flowers.

Got a Hot Tip?
