Scouts Scoop Out Elderly

Eagle Scouts, Boy Scouts, and an Explorer Scout helped out some snowbound seniors.

The public works department had a big enough job on their hands just getting the roads plowed, so some local youths pitched in to dig out some senior citizens left snowbound by the big storm.

Conlan Fay, an Eagle Scout, senior at Joliet Catholic Academy, and the station director for Shorewood Community Cable TeleVision, got the call that some elderly people were in a pinch and rallied the troops to rescue them.

Fay said he got to work at Village Hall Thursday when the call came in. He contacted two other Eagle Scouts, Jim and John Vogrin of Troop 256, a pair of Boy Scouts, Brody Fay and Robby Nudera of Troop 256, and a Explorer Scout Ben Fox, and the crew went to work.

Armed with shovels and snowblowers obtained from the public works department, the five young men hit the streets and dug out four houses occupied by senior citizens.

"They were kind of stuck in and couldn't get out," Conlan said.

Conlan said it only took him and his team about two hours to get the job done.

A paid employee of SCCTV, Conlan started as a volunteer after he caught the broadcasting bug while still in middle school. He is considering attending Columbia College in Chicago and pursuing a course of study in television.
