Timbers' Seniors Prom 'Huge Success'

From Timbers of Shorewood

The Timbers of Shorewood’s annual Seniors’ Senior Prom was a huge success, according to attendees Roger and Connie Bromley of Joliet. In fact, it was the first prom Mr. Bromley had gone to in his entire life. The event was held Friday, June 20, at The Timbers of Shorewood retirement community, 1100 N. River Rd., Shorewood.

The Bromleys heard about the event at a support group, and since Roger had missed his high school prom, they made the decision to go.

“First of all, my wife looked radiant,” Mr. Bromley said. “We didn’t know what to expect, but we enjoyed it immensely. We were so impressed with the involvement of the Timbers’ residents and staff.”

The Timbers’ dining room was transformed to fit the theme – Winter Wonderland.

“It was great fun transforming the dining room to a winter wonderland in the middle of June,” said Faith Varga, executive director at the Timbers of Shorewood. “The prom truly gets bigger and better with each passing year, and I think the 2014 prom outdid all of them!”

The prom was extremely well attended. Tables spilled out beyond the dining room into the large foyer and adjacent music room.

The dance floor was a busy place, and residents and seniors from the community danced to the Del Bergeson Orchestra with vocalist Sandi Haynes of Glendale Hts.

The event featured hors d’oeuvres, dancing, raffles and all the prom trimmings. A special moment was the crowning of the king and queen of the prom - Lou Bank and Fran Podobnik.

Teen “chaperones” made certain the night went smoothly. Twenty teens were from the National Honor Society of Joliet West High School and Key Club Junior Kiwanis. They served as escorts and dance partners.

“It was a wonderful sight to see so many people enjoying themselves,” Varga said.

“We’re looking forward to next year’s prom at The timbers,” said Roger Bromley. “We’ll be there. We’re planning on it.”

The Timbers of Shorewood is a rental retirement community which provides independent and assisted living apartments as well as a full schedule of activities and services. Furnished apartments are also available for a short-term stay - a weekend, a week, a month or longer.
