Vernon grew up in a musical environment. He has memories of dad playing "Casey Jones" on the harmonica, and "Turkey in the Straw." Young Jerry would accompany him on the guitar.

In 2006, Vernon recorded a CD titled "Country Gospel" for which he was awarded "Traditional Gospel Album of the Year, 2007" by the Tennessee Country Music Association. The next year, one of his songs “Dream Come True," which he wrote for his wife, won him "Songwriter of the Year, 2007" in the traditional country field, by the same organization.
