Rialto Square Theatre to Offer Daily Tours

The historic theater in downtown Joliet will also feature a pipe organ concert after each tour.

Anyone who has visited the Rialto Square Theatre has found themselves in the rotunda, necks thrown back, staring at the giant chandelier. Like almost everything at the Rialto, the 2.5-ton fixture, named the Duchess, has a story.

Up until now, though, getting to hear those stories was not so easy. This summer, however, you can sign up to tour the theater and get a firsthand look at the 86-year-old landmark.

Tours are scheduled daily from 10 a.m. to noon throught Aug. 31. In addition to learning about the famous chandelier, which is original to the Rialto, you will get a behind-the scenes tour that includes a stop in the theater's green room. The walls of the room are adorned with thousands of signatures from the artists who have performed at the Rialto.

When the 45-minute tour concludes, you can head into the auditorium for an additional 45 minutes of music from the Barton Grande Theatre Pipe Organ.

Tickets are $5 per person and can be purchased at the Rialto box office. No advance purchase necessary. Groups, however, may make advance purchases in order to assure space. A short video of the theatre being built will play in the box office lobby just prior to the start of each tour.

For more information, call 815-726-6600 or visit www.rialtosquare.com.

The daily tours and organ concerts are part of a tourism promotion being done in conjunction with the , City Center Partnership, Heritage Corridor Convention and Visitors Bureau and local downtown businesses.
