Students Have A Lot To Say About Troy

Meet Troy's Students of the Month for February.

Every month, teachers nominate students of the month. Every board meeting, the winners are presented. Every month they give profound speeches.

This month does not disappoint.

The Troy School Board and the Shorewood Lions Club honored 10 students from William B. Orenic Intermediate and Troy Middle Schools.

Here are some excerpts from what the students had to say:

Jacob Dahl, grade 6

"My favorite class is math. One class activity that I really enjoy came from Ms. Fisher's math class. Her math centers are challenging and fun at the same time."

Alexis Stevenson, grade 6

"The activity I participate in is Beta Club because we do fun things such as tutoring other kids, helping the teachers clean their rooms and organizing fundraisers. We have planned fundraisers for kids who have leukemia and the Will County Animal Control. Beta Club has made me a better person because it helps me work hard and keep getting good grades. It also teaches me responsibility and to be respectful."

Brooklyn Johnson, grade 6

"What I would like to talk to you about is the mind blowing experience I have had at Troy from kindergarten to sixth grade. The Troy district has teachers that are willing to meet their and their students' expectations. This has made me to grow up and do the same."

Jeremy Sikes, grade 6

"I like that here at Troy I can join cross country in fifth grade even though at almost every other school you have to start in sixth grade. I think that it gives us a little head start so that our already great cross country team can be even better."

Hunter Hoffmann, grade 7

"A teacher who went above and beyond to help me was Mrs. Prack. She helped me when I was struggling or going through a rough time. No matter what she made learning fun and easy to do. Mrs. Prack helped me reach my learning target."

Tommy Purcell, grade 7

"I played baseball for Troy Middle School baseball team. My positions are pitcher and first baseman. Playing baseball for Troy helped me to make lots of new friends, which in turn made Troy better for me."

Steven Tollios, grade 7

"I came to Troy in 2005 from Plainfield School District. My parents tell me it's the best decision they made. The Troy Band is amazing. I have been a percussionist for the last three years. In the Symphonic Band, I sit first chair. Mr. (Ted) Lega is a wonderful director and inspires us to do our best."

Eddie Miller, grade 8

"This year, Mrs. (Sheryl) Kubistal has been very helpful during class. She is always kind, patient, and willing to help me. Mrs. Kubistal has been very encouraging to me. I can always count on her help."

Mari Mekoola, grade 8

"I enjoy Troy because the coaches are always there to help you. They know how to push you to reach your goals. Troy sports programs strive for excellence and we as the athletes give that everyday in the classroom and on the field or court."

Ralph Blakney, Jr., grade 8

"Being my first year at Troy I didn't know what to expect. But I knew I wanted to make a mark in the school. So I tried out for the basketball team. I had to prove myself on the court with my skills. Making the team was easy. The challenge came with learning the strengths and weaknesses of all the other players. I met twelve great kids and had two wonderful coaches. The coaches taught us to become a family. We were 18-6 for the season and we didn't make it down state. But the bond I made with my team and coaches was my goal."

Jim McDonald from The Shorewood Lions presented each winner with an award, including gift certificates from Pizza 4 U, Buffalo Wild Wings, Babe's Hot Dogs, Chili's, Cemeno's Pizza, McDonald's and Sonny's Delight.
