Make a Meal Without Heating the House Up

We're thinking no one actually needs to tell you that it's hot outside. Sweltering even. But while you can usually counter that during the day by visiting a local pool or splashpad or by staying inside an air-conditioned building, staying cool might be an added challenge when it is time to put food on the table. Sure, you could choose to go out to eat or grill outside, but those are not the only options when the temperature rises.

  1. Make something that is served cold. We are thinking a salad with fruit and nuts for protein or a gazpacho soup. We found this Alton Brown recipe on Food Network.
  2. Put everything in one pot. This recipe for one-pot pasta has been floating around on various sites. But a local Patch editor tried it and gave it a thumbs up, so you should too.
  3. Look to the sea. Or at least look for your ingredients to come from there. A light fish taco like this one has light ocean flavors and citrus, which always seems to feel like summer.
  4. Try a lighter version of a summer favorite. Although this lighter potato salad won't serve as your entree, it is a great side dish.
  5. Looking for a breakfast or lunch option? Try a smoothie. It is healthy and because it is frozen, it will also keep you cool. You can even buy local fruit by visiting a local Farmer's Market. Click here for a schedule of local market options.
