No Waffling on Quality Fare at Crispy Waffle

The Crispy Waffle on Route 59 offers varied menu and large portions.

on Route 59 just south of Black Road in Shorewood is much more than waffles.

Open from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, it's the place to go for a delicious, hot breakfast or a satisfying lunch.

As my dining partner and I walked in on an early Thursday afternoon before Christmas, we were greeted by the aroma of fresh coffee and … Santa! Seated near the entrance beside a Christmas tree, Santa was ready to visit with the little ones.

The restaurant was lively with conversation and the lighting was brightened by three walls of windows. As soon as we sat down, our waitress appeared with a pot of coffee and our menus.

Most items cost less than $10 and ranged from typical breakfast fare such as omelets and pancakes to skillets, Benedicts and, of course, waffles. The lunch menu was equally as generous with soups, salads, sandwiches, panini (sandwiches with an Italian spin), and burgers. Portions were substantial with enough for a light eater to take home a snack for later.

We tried a breakfast entrée (spinach and feta omelet with seasoned hash browns and two pancakes) and a lunch entrée (tuna salad sandwich on oat bread with waffle fries, cole slaw and split pea soup). We were not disappointed.

If you manage to finish the large portions, you can leave the restaurant and turn left into .  A brisk walk on one of the wooded trails may help to lessen some of the gastronomic guilt.
