Channahon Park to Host Ride Ataxia Cycling Event

Nearly 300 cyclists are expected to join in the fight against Friedreich's Ataxia during a July 21 cycling event that begins and ends at Central Park in Channahon.

All together now, cyclists: Hello, Channahon.

Nearly 300 cyclists are expected to participate in Ride Ataxia/Chicago, a bicycle fundraiser for the Fredreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA).

The event is Sunday, July 21, and begins and ends in Central Park in Channahon. Cost is $55 to sign up on the day of the race and includes a T-shirt, fully stocked rest stops and lunch provided by Outback Steakhouse, Carrabba’s Italian Grill and Bonefish Grill after the ride.

There will be four routes for riders:

  • 4-mile route: Neighborhood loop. Beginners. 10 a.m. start.
  • 12-mile route: Out-and-back on the I&M Canal Towpath. Beginners. 9:30 a.m. start.
  • 32-mile route: Out-and-back, part on the Towpath and part on the road. Experienced cyclists. 8:30 a.m. start.
  • 52-mile route: First 9 miles on the Towpath. Varied traffic conditions. Advanced cyclists only. 8 a.m. start.

All procees from Ride Ataxia/Chicago go to FARA—a non-profit organization dedicated to research leading to treatments and a cure for Friedreich’s Ataxia.

What is FA? It is a debilitating, life-shortening degenerative neuromuscular disorder. The most common symptoms are balance problems, severe fatigue, heart disease, scoliosis, eyesight, hearing loss and slowed speech.
