A Chicago man was packed off to prison on a 68-year sentence for gunning down a man in Plainfield in 2007.
Ricardo Gutierrez, 24, shot 18-year-old Javier Barrios in the back. Barrios, a Romeoville resident, had supposedly threatened Gutierrez's girlfriend, Gabriela Escutia.
Escutia, 24, allegedly shot Barrios as well. She is waiting to stand trial for murder.
Prior to Will County Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes passing sentence, Gutierrez's attorney, Paul Napolski, said Escutia led the young man into the murder "by his nose."
Here's what else was going on in court last week:
- An Orland Park man got probation for possessing child pornography. Eric Holt, 28, also must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.
- A Cook County judge set an August date for attorneys to argue whether to suppress statements made by a teen charged with killing the parents of a pal. Mohammad Salahat, 18, was charged with murder for his alleged part in the grisly double slaying of John and Maria Granat in September 2011.
- The mother of a mentally disabled man who died of injuries allegedly suffered during a fight with a group home roommate sued the company that provided his Bolingbook housing.
- A prosecutor in the sex case of 33-year-old Margarita Hernandez said that Google has yet to respond to a subpoena for evidence. Hernandez allegedly set up and consummated a sex date with a teenage boy.
- Edward Hospital and Alexian Brothers Health System provided documents subpoenaed for the case against a Naperville man charged with running down a Joliet woman and leaving her to die. David McCarthy, 29, allegedly hit 20-year-old Melissa Lech on McDonough Street in August 2008.
- The lawyer for a Plainfield teen charged with sexually abusing a boy got the judge to go along with a bond reduction, but it still doesn't look like he's getting out anytime soon. Will County Judge Sarah Jones cut Jason Minger's $250,000 bond down to $150,000. But Minger only has enough to post 10 percent of a 30,000 bond, said his attorney, Chuck Bretz.
