Make Plans to Attend 'Sun and Medication' Seminar at The Timbers

A Newsome Home Health representative will talk about potential side effects of medication during periods of extreme heat.

Perhaps you are aware of the statistics: Of the 200 Americans who die of heat-related complications each summer, most are over the age of 50.

Elida Coseri, a public relations agent with The Timbers of Shorewood, referred to those hard numbers as a way of introducing an upcoming “Sun and Medication” seminar for seniors. A Newsome Home Health representative will present the seminar at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at The Timbers of Shorewood, 1100 N. River road, Shorewood.

Admission is free.

Coseri said seniors—as they age—become less sensitive to heat and the feeling of thirst in a news release. And she cited another stat: According to the American Geriatric Society’s Foundation for Health in Aging (FHIA), when the temperature hits the low-90s, it can be very dangerous to senior citizens because their bodies may be less efficient than younger adults to adequately respond to rising temperatures.

She suggested watching for these signs of possible heat illness in seniors:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Paleness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fainting
  • Fast and weak pulse rate
  • Fast and shallow breathing
The “Sun and Medication” seminar—which will focus on the importance of staying hydrated and the side effects of medications during extended heat waves—is open to the public. For more information, call Shelly Goggins at 815-609-0669 or visit http://www.timbersofshorewood.com.
