'Polar Plunge' for Special Olympics Being Held in Joliet

The March 8 event, sponsored by the Law Enforcement Torch Run, will be held at Leisure Lakes Resort on Frontage Road.

A "Polar Plunge" to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois will be held in Joliet on March 8.

Participants collect a minimum of $75 in donations from people who want them to jump into freezing cold water, dressed only in shoes and swimsuits, street clothes or costumes. No wet suits are allowed.

The Joliet event, one of 20 being held in Illinois by the Law Enforcement Torch Run to raise money for Special Olympics Illinois, will be held at noon March 8 at Leisure Lake Resort, 21900 SW Frontage Road.

All plungers must sign a waiver, and anyone under the age of 18 must supply a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

The deadline to sign up is Jan. 20.

Beyond the goodwill of doing something for charity, each participant will receive a hooded sweatshirt and a free post-plunge lunch and there are additional incentives for those who collect between $250 to $1,000.

A party will be held immediately after the plunge, and guests will be able to purchase lunch for $8.
