Come Out, Have a Good Time and Raise Money to Help Find a Cure for Childhood Cancer

Last year the event raised more than $50,000.

Five years ago, Channahon Police Officer Mike Lazzari had to travel to a neighboring town to shave his head for St. Baldrick's. That's because Channahon did not have a local event. But four years ago, that changed. Lazzari heard that Channahon had at one time had a local event and he set out to make that a reality again. Four years later, the event in Channahon is one of the largest in the area.

"Last year, we raised over $58,000," he said. "We're probably the top in the area and possibly in Will County.

"We surpassed Plainfield last year."

When Lazzari brought the event back to Channahon, he sought to have a family-friendly, one day activity where everyone could come out, have a good time and raise money to help find a cure for childhood cancer.

This year, 131 people are registered to shave their heads on Saturday.

"That, I believe, is our all-time high," Lazzari said.

In years past, Lazzari has raised his money specifically for the namesake of one child - Allison Fronsee. The 15-year-old is a Channahon resident and Lazzari is happy to say that she is cancer-free.

Last year at the St. Baldrick's event, Fronsee was still receiving minor treatments. But this year, she is not.

"My greatest moment in doing this was from two years ago," he said. "Allison's mom told me, 'I've seen directly how the St. Baldrick's money is spent and this is the greatest organization.'"

This year, as we did in 2011, Channahon-Minooka Patch will be sponsoring the face painting portion of the event. We have volunteers lined up to paint your face, your arm or your newly-shaven head. Please stop by. While you are there, sign up for our newsletter or nominate an outstanding kid in the community for our Whiz Kid series. Each action will be an entry into a drawing for a Patch-designed St. Baldrick's gift basket. We will have the drawings at the end of the night.
