Joliet West Prevails, Named 'Flyover Favorite' by ABC 7

It didn't look like it was in the cards early on, but school supporters rallied the troops all afternoon and beat Downers Grove North.

Joliet West High School fans voted and voted and voted Thursday, and when the numbers were counted, the hard work paid off: The school won the coveted honor of ABC 7's Flyover Favorite.

At 6:49 a.m. today, the television station did a live presentation of the award to principal Teresa Gibson and a huge crowd of students during its morning broadcast.

"It's a great day to be a Joliet Tiger," Gibson said during the segment. "The school is fantastic. ... It's just a fantastic place to be."

Throughout the football season, ABC 7 flew helicopters over 11 schools, which had set up formations spelling out messages and the schools' names.

The station then set up a competition between the 11 to determine the "favorite," and asked people to vote. By mid-morning Thursday, Joliet West was in fifth place but they rallied and spent most of the afternoon in second place. By the close of voting at 7 p.m., a last big push helped them pass Downers Grove North and win the contest.

With more than 43,000 votes cast in total, the end result was Joliet West, with 28.8 percent of the vote and Downers Grove with 28.2 percent.
