I need a lawyer and don't know any. How do I find the right lawyer for me?

If you find yourself in a situation where you need a lawyer, and you do not have one and do not know any lawyers, what is the best way to find the right lawyer?

If you need a lawyer and do not know any attorneys how should you go about finding a lawyer? People find themselves in situations where they need competent legal representation frequently. These situations could be where they are injured at work or in a car accident, where they find themselves suddenly in a divorce or an order of protection, where they are in a business dispute with a partner or associate, or where they might need a will or help with a real estate transaction. I have had many people come in after going through a real estate transaction by themselves and something incredibly bad happened that had there been a lawyer involved, the entire situation would not have occured.

So if you find yourself needing an attorney and don't know any where do you begin to find one? The first place would be ask your family and friends, especially if they have receently been involved in litigation or have had an attorney. The legal profession still operates on word of mouth referrals. Many successful attorneys do not have full page ads in phone books. In fact, an attorney who has too many large page phone book ads is usually a sign of an attorney who does not have word of mouth referrals which is a bad sign.

If you have a local case (for example a Will County case) you should look for an attorney in Will County. Many people have a conception that they need a chicago attorney for their local case. Frequently hiring an out-of-county attorney is a mistake. For starters, a local attorney is aware of the judge's likes and dislikes. Further, out-of-county attorneys are not on their home turf and are at a disadvantage. It is best to hire a local attorney for a local case.
