JTHS Student Wins Aktion Club T-shirt Design Contest

Joliet Township High School Transition Center student Keely Grogan has been named the winner of Kiwanis Aktion Club’s “AC Tee Contest.” Grogan’s design was chosen from many submissions submitted from a variety of Aktion Club districts.

“This is quite an honor for Keely, and we are extremely proud of her,” said Cindy Croce, Joliet Township High School Transition Center teacher.

The JTHS Transition Center provides training and support in vocational, community, and independent living skills for student with disabilities. Students in the Transition Center volunteer through the Kiwanis Club of Joliet, and in January of 2013, formed their own chapter of the Aktion Club to increase community service opportunities. The club’s mission is to provide adults living with disabilities the opportunity to develop initiative, leadership skills and to serve their communities.

“Aktion Club means community to our students…it means helping out our school, our city, and even other countries. The students love being members of a professional club that recognizes their potential for giving to others,” said Croce.

Grogan came up with her winning design after looking for inspiration online with her dad, Joe Grogan. After seeing images of hands with hearts in them, Grogan thought that idea really symbolized the community involvement that the Aktion Club represents.

Her t-shirt was recently introduced at the Aktion Club Training and Leadership Conference in Indianapolis, and it sold out that weekend. “She was even asked by some attendees to autograph their shirts,” said Croce.   “Upon learning that her design had won, Grogan said she was shocked and extremely happy after it all sank in. She enjoys being a member of the Aktion Club, helping out others, and going on service trips within the community.”
