JWHS Alumnus Charles Njoroge Receives Argonne National Laboratory Scholarship

Joliet West High School Alumnus Charles Njoroge has recently been awarded Argonne National Laboratory’s African-American Black Club (AABC) Scholarship in the amount of $2,000.

Students who have distinguished themselves through academic achievement and personal excellence are chosen to receive this honor, along with other African-American students in the Chicagoland area who are dedicated to pursuing a career in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM).

Selected for his strong demonstration in exceptional leadership and academic excellence, Njoroge was one of two students chosen from Joliet West to compete with other high school students across the Chicagoland area to earn this scholarship. A special banquet will be held at Argonne National Laboratory to honor Njoroge and the other award recipients.

The AABC of Argonne National Laboratory was established in October 2003 with the common goal of uniting minorities across the scientific community. The group’s vision is to promote cultural awareness, stimulate communication and to encourage fellowship, networking and scholarship. The AABC seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who have an interest in pursuing science, technology, engineering or mathematics as an academic curriculum and promote the growth of minority development in all disciplines. As higher education is a key component in today’s developing society, AABC intends to support and encourage students along their academic journey providing a scholarship to aid them during their first year in college.
