Pastor Klima Thanks the Crossing Guards

Crossing guards keep our children safe, so stop when they tell you to.

Some time back, I wrote a column about a shepherd I found on a Joliet street.

She was a lady in a bright yellow-green vest. She had a stop sign in her hand and a whistle in her mouth. She was a school crossing guard.

This past week I traveled down that same street. There on the corner by the school was my modern-day shepherd. She did not have any sheep. She was surrounded by school children. They were quiet and respectful. They waited patiently for the shepherd to direct and guide them.

The whistle blew, the stop sign was held high. Cars stopped and the whistle blew again. A lot of children followed the shepherd's instruction and crossed the street. After the children had crossed, the shepherd took down her sign and motioned for traffic to proceed.

I am a father and a grandfather. I am so thankful that there are shepherds of all kinds in the lives of our children and grandchildren.

So don't be in a hurry the next time a shepherd of children has you stop. Be thankful for this loving and caring person.

In all kinds of weather these people are there to protect our kids. So to the shepherd on Glenwood in Joliet, thank you for being there. Thank you for the care and the guidance you give to children. Just saying!
