Drive-by Shots Damage Car, not Victim: Cops

Police say an unknown assailant in a black SUV got off at least five shot, but did not injure the targeted driver, Joliet police said.

A black SUV with tinted windows pulled up alongside a Joliet man's car early Thursday morning and a gun was fired, but not one of the five or more shots struck the intended victim, Joliet police said.

It was the second drive-by shooting in Joliet in three days, but unlike the one Tuesday night -- in which a man was hit in the head and knee -- this one only damaged the vehicle, police Cmdr. Rich Demick said.

The incident occurred at about 2:50 a.m. Thursday in the 400 block of Fourth Avenue, when the SUV pulled up next to the victim's car, a passenger-side window was lowered and a gunshots were fired, Demick said. Police recovered five shell casings from the area.

The victim told police he didn't recognize the SUV or its driver or passenger, and he did not know why he was targeted, Demick said. He drove home in his damaged car and called police, he said.

In the Tuesday attack, which took place at 550 E. Jackson St., the victim was outside the house smoking a cigarette when a car approached and shots were fired. Although the victim was hit, the injuries were not life-threatening, Demick said.

In that case, the victim also said he did not know the shooter and could not identify the vehicle, he said.
