Just a day earlier, a motorist fled when a police officer attempted to pull him over for a seat belt violation near the junction of Route 52 and Interstate 55, Klima said.

The driver sped south on I-55. The pursuing Shorewood officer gave up the chase at Interstate 80 due to safety concerns.

The driver apparently exited I-55 at Route 6. Klima said two handguns ditched by the driver were recovered near the exit.

Thursday's fugitive remains at large.
