Drunk Drivers Beware The Sheriff

Designate a driver Labor Day weekend.

The Will County Sheriff plans to be a buzz kill on late-night drivers Labor Day weekend.

The department is putting residents on notice that deputies will be out in force.

“It’s just kind of an overall, ‘We are watching you’ seatbelt-DUI enforcement for the holiday,” said Kathy Hoffmeyer, a spokeswoman for the sheriff.

Saturday, the deputies will be assisting Plainfield, she said. Otherwise, no specific areas are scheduled targets. All unincorporated Will County, including Troy Township, will be affected, she said.

The general dragnet is the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” impaired driving crackdown. Midnight to 3 a.m. is the deadliest time on the roads, according to Illinois Department of Transportation data.

“The numbers do not lie,” said Dep. Chief Ken Kaupas. “We will be stepping up our late-night enforcement efforts, making sure impaired drivers are off the road and motorists are buckled up.”

During last year’s Labor Day weekend, 12 people across died in car crashes, only one involved an impaired driver, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office press release. That same weekend, 763 people were injured.
