Icy Roads Prevent First Responders from Reaching Stranded School Bus

Hazardous conditions on a gravel road prevented Plainfield Fire Protection District trucks from reaching the bus after it slid into a ditch.

Several Plainfield students were still on a First Student bus just before 4:30 p.m. when it slid into a ditch on Walker Road west of Ridge Road Friday — but icy conditions prevented first responders from reaching the vehicle.

Plainfield Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said no one was hurt in the incident, but said ice and melting snow made the road impassable.

"Those gravel roads out there are just a sheet of ice," he said. "The truck couldn't even get down the road," Stratton added, saying first responders requested a salt truck.

Stratton said the school district made arrangements for another bus to pick up the students.

According to Stratton, a tow truck was called to remove the bus from the ditch.
