A Joliet man who jumped on his hospitalized wife and attempted to strangle her was arrested Saturday night and charged with aggravated domestic battery, according to Joliet police.
Davaughn Lydell Ervin, 27, was reportedly intoxicated when he went to his wife's room at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet at about 6:45 p.m. and began screaming at her, Cmdr. Al Roechner said. He then jumped onto her bed and used his hands to ring her neck, he said.
The woman screamed for help and tried to reach for the phone, but Ervin knocked it to the floor and then fled before anyone could stop him, Roechner said.
Police interviewed the woman at the hospital and then went to the couple's house at 270 SE Frontage Road, where Ervin was taken into the custody, he said. In addition to aggravated battery, he also faces a charge of interfering with the reporting of domestic violence.
Ervin is being held in the Will County jail in lieu of $5,000 bond. According to jail records, Ervin was arrested and charged with domestic battery from a March 2012 incident.
