Police Find Man and Boy Dead in Yorkville Home

Yorkville police investigating incident; autopsies set for Friday.

Yorkville police are investigating the death of a 35-year-old man and a 4-year-old boy that occurred in a home in the 300 block of Bertram Drive.

Police discovered the pair after being called to the home at about 3:20 p.m. Wednesday for a well-being check, according to police.

The man was identified as Joseph R. Schmitt, police said. According to the Auora Beacon-News, Kendall County Coronor Ken Toftoy said Scmitt and his son, Wyland, were found in the garage of the home. Cause of death is unclear.

Toftoy told the Chicago Tribune Schmitt was found on the floor of the garage and Wyland was found unrestrained in a chair. When authorities entered the garage the family vehicle was not running, but the keys were in the ignition and the gas tank was empty, leading investigators to believe the vehicle had been running.

Scmitt and his wife, Kyle Weber, of Naperville, were in the process of getting a divorce, the Tribune reported.

Yorkville Police Chief Richard Hart said Thursday morning that the case is under investigation and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

“This is an isolated case and there is no threat to the community,” Hart said.

In a telephone interview Thursday afternoon Toftoy said he does not expect results from the autopsy or toxicology report for approximately 10 days.

He described the case as the toughest during his tenure at the Kendall County Coroner's Office. He said it was a tough weight on him emotionally particularly when they removed the body of Wyland from the scene.

On Friday moring Hart said they are waiting on autopsy results before making any statements regarding the death of the two Scmitts.

Patch will update this story as more details become available.

I am deeply touched and saddened by this story, as I live in Bristol Bay and walk past their house all the time. My thoughts and prayers to Wyland's mother and their families.
