Man in Custody for Trying to Kidnap 2 Girls Headed to School: Police
Carmen Aguirre twice asked the two middle-school students to get into his SUV before they asked a resident to call for help, Joliet police said.
A Joliet man who tried to get lure two young girls into his SUV was arrested Monday and charged with child abduction, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.
Carmen J. Aguirre, 61, was arrested at his 656 Grant St. home at 7:30 a.m., less than a half an hour after he trailed two girls, ages 12 and 13, as they walked westbound along the 600 block of 2nd Avenue en route to Washington Middle School, Roechner said.
The girls told police Aguirre drove his Jeep Cherokee alongside them, rolled down the window and told them to get inside his vehicle, he said. The girls ignored him, and decided to go south on Miller in at attempt to get away from him, he said.
Aguirre followed them, and again asked them to get inside his SUV, Roechner said. The girls again ignored him, and instead went to a home in the 500 block of Whitley and asked the resident to call police, he said.
Armed with a description of Aguirre and his vehicle, officers tracked the suspect to his home. The two victims positively identified Aguirre and he was taken into custody.
Although he did not actually kidnap the girls, Aguirre was charged with two counts of child abduction because the law includes the act of attempting to lure someone for the purpose of kidnapping within its description, Roechner said.
Aguirre is being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.
