Update: Shorewood Cops Dive Into Lake Forrest Caper

The Shorewood Police Department issued a public plea for help in solving a break-in from five days ago.

The broadcast a public plea for assistance in solving a burglary in the Lake Forrest subdivision.

"We are currently investigating several leads, but are seeking additional information from residents," the police alert said. "Please report any and all suspicious activity in and around your neighborhood."

The crooks broke into the house late Friday night or possibly Saturday morning, said Shorewood police Sgt. Jason Barten. The residents returned to their home in the tony subdivision in the early hours of Saturday and discovered the crime.

The thieves absconded with money, jewelry and other assorted property, Barten said.

The burglars forced their way into the house through a back door, he said, but first cut the phone lines to disable the alarm system.

The cutting of the telephone lines to bypass the alarm has Shorewood detectives thinking the same burglar — or band of burglars — has struck before in Joliet and unincorporated Will County, Barten said. The Shorewood police are now working with the county cops and Joliet investigators to solve the mystery.

But even with three agencies on the case, Barten stressed the importance of a vigilant public.

He advised residents to be aware of their surroundings and to communicate with neighbors so they know who is out of town and what houses to keep an eye on.

Barten also recommended calling the police if something seems amiss.

"Let us be the ones to make the decision on whether something is suspicious or not," he said.
