An ex-convict allegedly led the police on a high-speed chase before bailing out of his car and fleeing on foot.

An ex-convict fleeing the cops succeeded in making his getaway but ended up surrendering anyway, police said.

Moises Cerda, 21, of 414 Harwood St. turned himself in at the police station Tuesday evening and was charged with aggravated fleeing or eluding and obstructing a police officer.

Early Tuesday morning, an officer reportedly attempted to pull Cerda over after catching him speeding on Plainfield Road near Ingalls Avenue. But instead of stopping, Cerda turned right off of Plainfield and cut his headlights, police said.

The officer pursued Cerda's black Ford Focus in and around the near west side, police said, with Cerda blowing through numerous stoplights and stop signs.

As Cerda headed south on Dawes Avenue, police said, he turned onto Loral Avenue and bailed out of the car. The vehicle reportedly continued rolling down the dead-end street until it hit a tree.

Cerda left a passenger behind when he ran off, police said, and the passenger gave up Cerda's name.

When Cerda turned up at the station that night, he gave verbal and written statements implicating himself as the fleeing driver, police said. He reportedly explained that he is on parole and did not want to go back to jail. Cerda, who did time in prison for obstructing justice, did go back to jail.
