Three Shot Outside Small Grocery Store; Sheriff's Office Investigating

Suspects are being sought in the attack, which left two Joliet residents and one man from Chicago Heights with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Three people, two of whom are Joliet residents, were shot by an unknown assailant outside a small grocery store on Fairmount Avenue Wednesday afternoon, the Will County Sheriff's Office said.

The incident occurred at about 6 p.m. as all three victims were walking into the Keyes Grocery at 1609 Fairmount Ave. in unincorporated Joliet/Lockport Township, sheriff's office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said in a news release.

Police arrived on the scene to find a 43-year-old Joliet woman laying face down on the store's driveway after being shot in the right side of the back, Hoffmeyer said. The woman was transported by the Lockport Township Fire Department to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where she is listed in stable condition with a non-life-threatening injury.

Simultaneously, sheriff's deputies were notified that Joliet police officers had found two men near Cardinal Lane who had also been shot at the store, Hoffmeyer said.

One man, a 26-year-old Chicago Heights resident, had been shot in the buttock and the other, a 24-year-old Joliet resident, had been shot near the right armpit. Both were transported in good/stable condition to Silver Cross with non-life-threatening injuries.

The two men were together and did not know the female victim, who was by herself as she entered the store, Hoffmeyer said.

Deputies found bullet holes on the store's outside wall as well as two more embedded in a glass case about 10 feet inside the store, she said.
