Two Nabbed Stealing Cell Phones from Unlocked Cars: Police

The pair were spotted in the Riverbrook Estates subdivision as they tried car door handles and went into unlocked vehicles, Joliet police said.

Two Joliet men spotted stealing cell phones out from unlocked cars early Monday morning were arrested and charged with burglary, Joliet police said.

Officers responding to a 1 a.m. call about two suspects going into cars in the Riverbrook Estates subdivision spotted Antonio Reese, 19, and Devin M. Montgomery, 23, as they tried car door handles in the 1300 block of Broadlawn Drive, entered an unlocked vehicle and took a cell phone, Capt. Tab Jensen said.

When the pair saw the police, they took off running, Jensen said. Montgomery was stopped at the scene and Reese in the parking lot of the nearby Walmart store on Route 59, he said.

Police determined the two men had broken into several cars in the 5100 block of Pontigo Glen Drive and the 1300 block of Broadlawn and stole only cell phones, Jensen said.

Both were charged with five counts of burglary. Reese, of 706 2nd Ave., was also charged with obstructing justice/destroying evidence and Montgomery, of 803 Julia, with resisting a peace officer.

Both are being held in Will County jail pending a bond hearing.

According to jail records, Reese has been arrested three times since 2011 -- on aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and criminal trespass to vehicle charges in August 2012; on burglary, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of firearm charges on Nov. 20, 2011; and on aggravated battery and domestic battery charges on Nov. 15, 2011.

Montgomery was arrested on a domestic battery charge in April; on possession of cannabis and felon in possession of a weapon charges in August 2012; twice for domestic battery in 2011; and on a knowingly damaging property charge in March 2009.
