An elderly woman was robbed this morning and her house burglarized by a man who threatened her with a screwdriver, Will County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Ken Kaupas said.
Officers are seeking a black man driving a black or dark-colored vehicle whom the victim met in her driveway when she returned to her home in the 1800 block of Brandon Road, just outside the city limits of Joliet, at about 11:25 a.m., Kaupas said.
Initially, the suspect asked the victim if she wanted to hire him to do yard work for her, he said. When she declined, he forcibly pulled the woman from her car, brandished the screwdriver and told her to give him her purse, he said.
The woman did as he requested, and the suspect fled. She then entered her house and discovered it had been ransacked and that she had been burglarized, Kaupas said. Investigators are still processing the scene to determine what was stolen.
The victim is still being interviewed for more details about the robber and the vehicle he was driving. It's possible the car had temporary Illinois plates, Kaupas said.
Anyone with information about the burglary, robbery or suspect is asked to call the Will County Sheriff's Office's investigations unit at 815-727-8574.
