Shorewood Seeks Major Overhaul of Westshore Park

Village board clears way to ask state to pony up half the cash for an envisioned $400,000-plus revamp of property.

The Shorewood Village Board signed off on a proposal to ask the state to chip in half the money to cover a massive construction project for Westshore Park.

The plan that was to be FedExed to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday called for $428,900 in improvements to the riverfront park on the east end of town.

If the Department of Natural Resources accepts the grant application, it will pay back half the costs incurred by the village for the Westshore Park face-lift.

Eric Hornig of Naperville's Hitchcock Design Group presented the plan to the village board at its meeting Tuesday night. The plan includes, among other things, $51,362 to improve a trail through the park, $26,627 for a volleyball facility, $68,320 for a picnic shelter, $85,705 for a splash park, and $91,449 for a new fish and river-themed "play environment."

If everything goes as planned, Hornig said, the renovation "likely" would begin "on a 2013 construction cycle."
