Survey Shows Same-Sex Marriage Numbers Across Illinois

Will County and several others do not count same-sex marriages separately, which could skew the numbers a bit.

More than 5,000 same-sex couples have taken advantage of the right to marriage equality since it became law in Illinois on June 1, according to Equality Illinois.

A survey by the organization breaks down how many couples have applied for marriage licenses since last month.

The total could actually be higher than 5,000, according to the survey, however, since Will and Kendall are among several Illinois counties that do not count the number of same-sex marriages, treating all marriage licenses the same.

Will County did have 66 couples with civil unions who applied to have them converted to marriages, according to Equality Illinois.

The majority of the applications came from Cook County, which had 2,370 new licenses and 800 civil union conversions.
