JCA Girls Take Tigers by the Tail

Joliet Catholic Academy's girls cross country team opens the season by winning the Tiger Conditioner hosted by Plainfield North. At the same meet, the boys place fourth.

“Be Awesome” is a big part of the philosophy being developed for the Joliet Catholic Academy cross-country teams by girls coach Mindy Izzo and boys coach Mark Clarke.

Awesome summed up the girls’ finish in the season-opening Tiger Conditioner hosted by Plainfield North as the Angels placed first with 20 points. The Hilltopper boys placed fourth with 90.

For the girls, junior Erin Kennedy (Custer Park) and sophomore Moira McSteen (Channahon) teamed up for a time of 24:28 to win the meet, which features each partner running half of the race.

Rachelle Sartori (Joliet) and junior Frankie Sikorski (Shorewood) placed second with a time of 24:35, while Stephanie Demos (Plainfield) and Lauren Randich (Joliet) took 17th with a time of 26:43.

“We have a good combination of veteran runners and newcomers, and it’s going to be awesome,” Izzo said. “Both teams did an amazing job, and I can’t say enough about how excited I am for both the boys and girls teams this season.”

For the boys, Zach Siegfried (Bolingbrook) and Jeremy Adams (Elwood) led with a 34:12 to place 17th. The girls each run two miles apiece in the conditioner, while the boys end up running three miles.

“Our one-mile splits at all levels were very encouraging,” Clarke said. “Now we have to put it all together in a three-mile race.”

In the frosh-soph race, Maddie Kennedy and Chloe Korst placed third with a 27:27. Ryan Hippman and Connor Runge paced the boys with a 27:37.

GIRLS GOLF: In East Suburban Catholic Conference action at Woodruff, the JCA girls golf team scored a 192 to finish behind Marian Catholic’s 159 and Carmel’s 190.

Claire O’Connor (45), Carmella Bolin (49), Laurel Stofan (49) and Maddy Troha (49) were the top four finishers for the Angels. Marian Catholic’s Sylvie Brick and Bree Veazey each shot a 37 for medalist honors.

“We were in a position to beat Carmel but we seemed to lose our focus,” JCA coach Kathy Major said. “It was disappointing, but a good learning experience for our team. Marian Catholic is exceptional.”
