JCA Sports Wrap: Lennon, Parris Power Boys Golf

Shorewood's Nick Lennon shot an 82 as the Joliet Catholic Academy boys golf team advanced to the sectional. The girls volleyball team swept St. Viator.

As steady as a battleship in rough waters.

That described the effort Tuesday afternoon of Joliet Catholic Academy junior Nick Lennon.

On a Joliet Country Club course that played far tougher than its listed par-72, Shorewood native Lennon shot a solid 82 for fourth place as the Hilltoppers advanced to the sectional with a round of 335.

Senior Cole Parris tied for fifth at the Class 2A JCA Regional with an 83, while junior Brandon Newsome and senior Drew Stover (Channahon) each tied for 11th with 85s. Lemont won the regional with 327.

“The golf course won,” JCA coach Mark Hansen said. “Our regional ended up with the highest scores in the state and only one golfer was able to break 80. The greens were unbearable to play.”

Lincoln-Way West’s Will Knights was the medalist with a 76. Lemont’s Shane Purtle and Ray Cepele tied for second with 80s. JCA travels to the Lemont Sectional on Saturday at Broken Arrow. Lemont, JCA and Lincoln-Way West (345) qualified from the regional.

“We shot the type of round that we really have all year,” Hansen said. “Being steady and consistent, no ups and no downs, has been the trademark of our team this year and that really is a good thing.

“There’s no doubt that the course was a difficult challenge to face. But if we can survive this like we did, we should be pretty good to compete in the sectional.”

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Loyola-bound junior outside hitter Morgan Reardon delivered 9 kills as the Angels remained atop the East Suburban Catholic Conference standings with a 25-18, 25-14 win over St. Viator.

Senior setter Lauren Robertson (Wilmington), an Evansville recruit, totaled 4 kills, 6 assists, 7 points and 6 digs for JCA (20-2, 6-0). Loyola-bound senior outside Kelly Feigh (Plainfield) added 5 kills and 6 digs.

Senior libero Jill Hickey (Oswego) led with 10 digs, senior defensive specialist Meggie Fahrner (Plainfield) also had 7 points and senior middle Hailey Pennington (Plainfield) contributed 3 block kills. Senior setter Emily Schoenstedt and junior setter Mallory Mangun combined for 11 assists.

“It was a steady match and the girls got the job done,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said. “We’ve played eight matches since last Thursday, so it will be nice to get back into the gym and practice to work on some of the little mistakes that we need to remedy.”
