JCA Sports Wrap: Soccer, Volleyball Stay On A Roll

Shorewood's Nick Legare recorded a pair of assists to pace the Hilltoppers soccer team past Morris, while the Angels volleyball team improved to 10-0 by sweeping Bolingbrook.

Joliet Catholic Academy boys soccer coach Tom Cranmer called it “the goal of the night.”

Senior forward Karsen Stuchl (Bolingbrook) scored 2 goals, including a shot from a tough angle that streamed underneath the crossbar to cap the Hilltoppers’ 5-0 win Thursday over host Morris.

Bryan Chavez also scored 2 goals for JCA (3-2-1) — which is unbeaten in its last four games. Grayson Horton (Crest Hill) added a goal and Nick Legare (Shorewood) chalked up a pair of assists.

“It took us about 10 minutes to settle down and find our rhythm,” JCA coach Tom Cranmer said. “We kept the pressure on Morris and really controlled the game. Our forwards, Horton and Stuchl, had really good games and were connecting with each other.

“Chavez controlled the midfield, supplying numerous balls through to our forwards and outside midfielders to run onto the attack. And our defense played really well again, only allowing a couple of chances during the entire game.”

And that goal by Stuchl?

“It was the goal of the night,” Cranmer said. “He took a shot from the far side of the field that managed to get over the goalkeeper and under the crossbar from a really tight, difficult angle.”

VOLLEYBALL: The nationally ranked Angels improved to a perfect 10-0 with a 25-18, 25-16 nonconference victory over host Bolingbrook as senior setter Emily Schoenstedt (Plainfield) celebrated her birthday with 7 kills, 10 assists and a pair of block kills.

Junior outside Morgan Reardon led JCA with 9 kills, 5 digs and 2 block kills, while junior setter Mallory Mangun added 10 assists and 8 points and senior setter Alaina Ragusa had 9 points. Senior outside Kelly Feigh (Plainfield) contributed 4 kills and 5 digs.

Senior middle Hailey Pennington (Plainfield) picked up 7 digs and senior libero Jill Hickey (Oswego) notched 7 digs for the Angels, who broke a sixth and final tie at 15-15 in Game 1 before pulling away for a 23-17 lead. In Game 3, JCA pulled away from a 10-10 tie for an 18-11 lead.

“I was happy to see the speed with which Schoenstedt and Mangun ran the offense,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said. “They moved the ball quickly to a variety of hitters and controlled the tempo of the match. Bolingbrook played great defense and made us work to earn our points.”
