After 21 years, Joliet West Band Director Kevin Carroll is saying goodbye.

The instructor, who who last year won the prestigious Golden Apple Award, has submitted his resignation, reportedly to accept a job in Aurora.

Joliet Township District 204 spokeswoman Kristine Schlismann confirmed Monday that Carroll has submitted his resignation, which will go before the school board for a vote at its June 17 meeting.

Last month, a JT West junior started an online petition urging the board to hire a second band director to relieve Carroll's heavy workload.

"I began the petition to address a noticeable problem that I and my fellow students have noticed over the past few years," student Youjia Wang told Patch. "The band program has grown substantially over the years and it will continue to grow in the future. However, the school has not provided enough support to accommodate this growth and Mr. Carroll, along with the band's resources, is stretched incredibly thin."

Board of Education President Jeff Pierson told Patch a second band director was not in next year's budget, but that could change for the 2015-16 school year.

Joliet West's music programs have won numerous awards and honors during Carroll's tenure

Schlismann said the Joliet West band director job is posted as an anticipated vacancy until the board of education can approve Carroll's resignation.

ex I agree some of these teachers cops fireman are overpaid dir a 40 hour job and to say he gave up all but 3 weeks if his summer vacation is laughable. Nobody gets a summer vacation. But you seem a little bitter. Are you not happy with your pay?

Being self employed I'm always happy. The harder I work the more I earn. The problem is the taxes we all pay. Why do you think Illinois is in such bad shape right now? It's unfunded Pension Obligations.. over 100 Billion Dollars and growing. Illinois' Unfunded Pension Liabilities Cross $100 Billion Mark .... http://www.bondbuyer.com/issues/122_212/illinois-unfunded-pension-liabilities-cross-100-billion-mark-1057014-1.html

Our family is very sad to see Mr Carroll leave JTHW- our daughter is a Junior and has been in the band there for 3 years. Under his teaching and supervision and encouragement, she has flourished as a musician and student. We have seen first had how devoted he is to his students and the band program. He works more than anyone I have ever known. That he has asked for help so that he might enjoy the milestones of his own child is a reasonable request, given his tenure and longevity at JTHW. The fact that the Joliet school board can so easily let this prize winning teacher leave our school is a testament to the disregard they have for the students in the Band program, even though Band is an award winning program in our state. It is a sad day for all of the current and future band kids. I am only glad that my child was able to sudy under Mr. Carroll as he is what a TEACHER is all about.

Shame on the school board. Hardest working most successful teacher possibly in the district and this is how he is rewarded. Joliet city of chumps....
