Kids Thank Teachers and Coaches

Meet Troy's Students of the Month for January.

"I know you'll go far," said Troy School Board President Mark Griglione. "All I have to do is look at you."

Griglione was talking to the 10 students who were selected as January Students of the Month. All of the students were dressed very well, he said. Some were wearing suits and ties. Their appearance was impressive, he said.

The Troy School Board and Shorewood Lions honored the students at the district's board meeting last week. Teachers nominated the students based on respect, responsibility, peace, citizenship and leadership.

"In essence, we are looking for qualities that exemplify Troy," said Lucille Feeney, assistant principal at William B. Orenic.

A few of the students gave credit to their teachers.

"I strongly believe that all the teachers I have are so wonderful," said Steve Torres.

He emphasized that they help him stay focused.

"I am a better person because of my fifth grade teacher, Mr. Larson," Kapral said.

Berry said that he has learned a good work ethic at school.

A couple students mentioned the assembly the school held on bullying.

"It was inspirational to me," Robinson said. "It taught me to stand up for the person being bullied."

"It really hit hard for me and my friends," Suriaga said.

Other students talked about the activities they are involved with. Poch is in wrestling. Gorka is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. Kapral attended a gymnastics tournament in Wisconsin, placing first on rings and fifth all around. Robinson plays basketball and music. Cruz said she finds band very challenging. Jose Torres plays basketball and is preparing to compete with the science club in hydrogen fuel cell cars.

"Activities are the best part of school for me," Dow said.

Jim McDonald from the Shorewood Lions then presented each winner with an award, including gift certificates for Pizza 4 U, Buffalo Wild Wings, Babe's Hot Dogs, Chili's, Cemeno's Pizza, McDonald's and Sony's Delight ice cream.
